hi Newbie here, I am going to buy my mates 09 plate Golf GTD which i am really looking forward to. It has done 60k miles and I was wondering when the cambelt needs changing? and should i have it done straight away? Also, is there anything else i should have done now it is just about out of warranty? It has full service history so i shall carry that on. Is there anything i should know about the car? as i have not owned a golf before. Thanks in advance!
Paul

HI,
I think the cambelt is not due a change until either 100k or 120k; can't remember off hand but I know it's not 60k like the older PD engines were. AS there are no unit injectors now; there's less loading on the belt.

Welcome to the forum Paul. (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/KStanier/VWwelcome.gif)
The timing belt replacement interval for the GTD is:
MY2009
Timing belt - Renew Every 120000 miles or 48 months
Timing belt tensioner - Renew Every 240000 miles or 96 months
MY2010
Timing belt - Renew Every 140000 miles or 48 months
Timing belt tensioner - Renew Every 140000 miles or 48 months

put her in to VW for the MOT a week before the Warranty expires, that way any warranty work will be picked up!

Thanks Keith,
I was going to get the cambelt changed as if they go its a broken engine. Thanks for the manufactures figures, thats a long life for the cambelt! If it goes outside warranty i guess you would be covered. Thanks for the MOT tip. Is servicing expensive on the GTD?
thanks paul

Hope you enjoy your new motor! 6months and 10k into my ownership and she returned >80mpg on the trip home on the MFD last night.

 were you actually driving it or were you just steering and being pushed with the engine turned off?
That sounds incredibly high, even for a diesel. Is your fuel consumption being calculated correctly by the computer? Think I'd check it manually next time I filled the tank.

called into vw bristol today to ask the cambelt question- i didn't know it was called the timing chain? anyway he said every 4 years and a typical service was £200.

The GTD has a timing belt, not a chain.
Current prices on VW website for servicing are;
- minor service £139, major service £259
- cambelt replacement £339, cambelt and water pump replacement £419
