Title: Mk2 GTI MFA bulb and 'Hour Button' not working
Post by: scott-o on 29 February 2012, 12:38
Afternoon,

i picked up an immaculate gti last weekend and this is literally the only thing wrong with it. Is there a simple fix or do i require new clocks?

Cheers

Scott

Once you get the cluster out, bulbs are pretty easy to change.  Push and twist.  hour set button depends on whats up, broken, stuck, misaligned, you can only tell by looking.  Might be worth looking for a set of cheap clocks as a spare which will give you more confidence to take your currant ones apart.

If it's the bulb for the digital clock, you can just about get your hand up to replace it. You have to remove the lower shelf,  but it's not easy as you're working blind. If it's the top ones, you're stuffed, you have to remove the clocks, and all the trim associated with it.
The hour button could well be stuck in. Possibly because too big a thing was used to set it. I use a needle.
The only other way to set the clock is disconnect the battery and re-connect at midnight as it sets to 0-00 on re-connection.
Might be less stressful than removing the clocks

It's the clock one at the bottom yes. That sounds promising with being able to do it whilst in situe. What bulbs are they?

Great idea on hooking up the battery at midnight. Think that will be tonight's job!

Thanks for the help you two, hopefully won't need to take them out. I'll have a wiggle able with a needle too and see if I can 'unstick' it first.

An easier way to reset the clock is to pull the appropriate fuse for a few seconds, also saves on reprogramming your radio and getting mucky hands. #21 or 22 on post 89 cars IIRC, not sure about earlier ones. Have a look in the fuse guide in the maintenance & info section.

Yeah - use the fuse to reset the clock - it also protects the interior light (late spec anyway).

Good luck with swapping the bulb in situ they can be pesky to remove but they only need a quarter turn to the left to undo - a bit like a bayonet fitting.

The bulbs are still available from the stealers i believe - part number 431 919 040 bulb in base, 12V 1.2W.

I make an LED version of these, brighter than the stock bulbs & better light distribution...

Cheers for the help lads :) wish I'd come back on before pulling the battery to do the clock though. I'm going to have to hope the code is in the mass of paperwork somewhere haha I've only had it out the garage to clean it since doing that so didn't notice and it's chucking it down now so it'l be staying inside today and I'll look for this code!

Them LED lights look ace, how much are we talking? Think I'll get a standard one too, I'm off to vw next sat anyway to pick up some mk2 mats.

Another quick one, I noticed on fan speed 1, it's abit noisy on start up and when I switch it back to 0 and it slows down, it is noisy. Can I just remove that grommet under the cubby hole on the passenger side and spray some White grease up? Didn't want to just do it and break something.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated

for the hour button...clocks need to come apart and then take off the mfa display , i use a fibre glass cleaning stick to clean up the contacts that the button touches

all the ones ive done have worked 100% after a clean up

Remove the passenger side lower tray, disconnect the heater and drop it down to remove.  Once out you can spray the motor.  Very common on mk2s!

Thanks pigbladder, something to do at some point in the future for sure. For now it tells me the right time though but it's good to know the original can probably be sorted!

Dragonfly, thanks for that, I have just been in the garage and have taken it out and taken the motor and White fan out of it's housing. Is it just a case of getting some ptfe White grease or copper grease and spraying it in and around each end? I'll have to go and buy some tomorrow. Just going to clean the fan now before top gear!

Cheers for all the help, this forum has been great for it so far. You are all helping a mk2 virgin get some confidence to work on the car :)

Yes just give the motor a squirt or 2 of grease and gently spin it by hand.  Don't over do it and grease everywhere.

The noise will eventually return.

All we need now is someone who sells the heater panel with an led in.
I tried. And failed.
