Title: Hi everyone New member with Mk2 8v Project
Post by: slimwadey on 27 February 2012, 22:56
Hi all
New member here, Steve 41 yrs old
I have owned golfs on and off for ages but not had a GTI for years
But on sunday i picked up a Mk2 '89 8v for the paltry sum of £175, its got MOT and Tax for 5 months too, it even had 1/2 tank of fuel... so.. Yay me !
Ok it needs work but ... ITS MINE !!!!
Luckily i dont need it as a daily driver so i will be performing some tidy up work on the old girl
Its a bit tired but all original and has some of the following traditional MK2 issues

And some other gremlins too

Bit about me then, i am a manager of a Mercedes aprroved Bodyshop and a Mechanic of 25 odd years so i will have no issues getting stuff done
Some of the things i want to do are
Fit big bumpers and lower the car with a nice set of 15" wheels.. yup pretty wild eh? .. not really but i like what i like and .. ITS MINE !!!
The idea is to sort the little bits first and then do the big stuff when the car is running right and driving/stopping good
I have loads of kids and they are mostly boys so cars are a big thing in our house... we all love a GTI (as long as its a Mk2 )
In the recent past i have resprayed my sons 1.6 mk2 base and added some GTI bits to make it look good, he wants a GTI but insurance is way too high
Anyway enough waffling ITS MINE !!
I will start a project log in the Mk2 section so keep an eye out for the latest updates
This first pic is my GTI, the new wheel bearing is being fitted tomorrow and its just the start

This second pic is of my sons 1.6 MK2 . This has coilovers and added GTI bumper and arches,oh and a full respray in tornado red, otherwise its pretty STD

Last pic is of a corsa i did for my 17yr olds birthday last month. it looked faded and had half the engine missing when we got it , full respray later and engine rebuild by me and this is the result
Sorry no more corsa pics ever again ... i promise

Steve

Thanks for the welcomes everyone

I sorted the wheel bearing today and then some new plugs, leads and dizzy cap/rotor too.
Then i pressure washed the engine band it wont start now, i had to leave it at work in the spraybake to dry it out
