Post by: Veedubgt18v on 24 May 2005, 09:21
right i have a mk2 8v digi and i get a weird knocking noise when i turn right and go over small stuttery bumps (like cobbles etc) doesnt do it in a staraight line and not when i got left either

the noise comes from the front of the car and i can hear it and feel it thru the steering wheel and pedals

i have had a quick look but cant see anything obvious just wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to what to look at

Mines makin a knockin too, closer inspection revealed one of my mid box exhaust rubbers had gone. Maybe give ur exhaust a wobble all the way along n see if it knocks. Depending how it hangs(cos of missing rubber) cud be the reason it only knocks when you turn right.

exhaust from the downpipe back but that was ages ago. i have got underneath it and looked at tie rode ends, steering rack bushes, roll bar bushes wishbone bushes, and although they all show smoe signs of age none af broken split missing loose etc. i ahve looked a ball joints etc to. the oly area im not sure about is the top mounts the one on the drivers side is about 10 - 15 mm away from the suspension turret and the passenger one is about 5 mm away all the bolts are tight tho

will re check everything today........

The nuts might be tight that hold the plate at the top but that doesn't mean the nut on top of the strut might not have come loose. Sounds like the top of the strut may have dropped slightly.

If thats all ok, it may be a CV joint...........sometimes as they wear, instead of getting noisy they can start to lock slightly as they turn.

If you haven't got it sorted by Sunday then bring it along and I'll have a look at it

As the CV rotates, if its badly worn it can lock and try and resist the rotation. Then it will suddenly release and continue turning...........its a bit more dramatic than a rattle, believe you me..........nearly through me off the road first time it happened on my Audi, scared the sh!t out of me. It actually knocked the steering over to the left in jolts as it rotated  They can just get noisy and rattle on a certain steering lock.

I would check out your top mounts and make sure its all secure up there first. Another thing you could try is jack the front end up and put the steering lock on. Then try rocking the wheel left and right, see if there is too much play in the strut and particularly at the top of the strut.
