What you want them for? You don't need them.

changing a spring. is it possible without?
-
It's only £10 how much cheaper do you want them?!
Don't need them if fitting coilovers as can remove the shock and spring as one but will need them if replacing standard spring.

as cheap as possible LOL :)
standard spring so no way round using them??

You can get the spring off without them. As your undoing the top bolt, aim the spring away from you/anything valuable and undo the bolt slowly, and hope it doesn't release to harshly. It's a highly recommended not to this tho might i add. I have done it in the past tho

I undo the nut, change the spring then put my body weight on it to compress then get anyone to quickly put the nut on with couple of turns.
Much faster and cheaper with out the tool

i don't think getting the old one off will be the problem, as the top 2 inches have broken off i assume it wont be under tension???
it's getting a new one on i'm worried about
-
O right, well as tweed said will to it
-
If the top 2 inches have broken off and not under tension then you won't need the compressors. Should possible to compress manually to reassemble maybe get a mate to help.
-
ok sounds good...
to compress the new one...is it just a case of getting it in position and pushing down on the wing to compress and get the nut done up on the top mount??
-
Oh dear
-
just go to halfords, there only £15 and there pretty decent.
no point risking taking a spring in the face

No you reassemble the suspension components off the car. Take a look at some of the how to guides on here.
