Title: The Moon
Post by: AlexMozza on 25 February 2012, 18:19
Now I'm no expert photographer, but I thought these were pretty good, considering that the object is 238857 miles away and taken with my iPhone!

I took them through my Meade 14" telescope.

Going to try and get some of Jupiter and Saturn which are also out tonight.

How good is the telescope?

A friend of mine did the same, iPhone to telescope:

2nd February. A wander around Wokingham and breakfast in Costa. A drive to mums and Shepherd's Pie for dinner. Messed with Pete's telescope and shot this. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickjonesmedia/6808710155/) by NickJonesMedia (http://www.flickr.com/people/nickjonesmedia/), on Flickr

And this is what my brother shot with his Canon 7D and an EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM  which he borrowed:

Jesus Christ! Just looked up the cost of them!

I was gonna buy a spotting scope to use with my compact camera so I could digiscope but the cost of decent glass means I might was well buy a dSLR with a super-duper-telephoto lens. Would be cheaper!

Yeah, Deffo not a cheap hobby!, However I want a better camera to attach to it!

Take a look at the two shots I posted, one taken with iPhone and a telescope, the other with a Canon 7D and a Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM worth £1500 ish.

That's kinda what you need to take these shots, but you couldn't use the Canon combo for just 'scoping the sky.

Im trying to ave for a good Digital SLR as mine came with lots of attachments.
All you need is a nice long exposure and its amazing what you can see!

Taking pictures of the moon was a surprise in terms of the settings required on the camera. You need to set it to full manual and have it setup for sunny f16 rule

i took some years with a 12inch Newtonian, and a few different cameras. The moon is pretty easy to shoot quite well, but Saturn was always a pain to get anything decent...

Anyway, moon:

Saturn:

And this is the telescope, including Venus and the Moon in the background:

This was taken at about 10pm at Snetterton Race Circuit...looks more like the Sun!

I could do with editing out the stray cloud and fencing.
