Title: May have found a bargain 16v. Advice needed!
Post by: SCO_VAG on 25 February 2012, 17:09
Hey guys!! just joined this recently as i'm in the process of looking at a 16v anni. The guy selling her originally wanted £900, I then got him down to £700.

So I went to see it and the bodywork is fecking immaculate, as is the interior. The car has sat for 3 months unused and runs quite rough which im hoping new spark plugs, oil etc should solve.

Also the steering is making a horrible squeaking noise and is putting up resistance to turn which I can only assume is the power steering pump? It also needs a new exhaust.

Given these problems I managed to get him down to £500 which I feel is reasonable as the thing is a minter bodywork wise, it also has a VW factory fitted push start button as it was an ex mobillity car.

Would the steering issue be very expensive?

Would a cheap n cheerfull ebay exhaust do the trick?

Very new to these Golfs so any advice is seriously mucho appreciated.

Cheers, John

Steering issue will either be the PAS pump or even just the belt, as for exhaust I'd look out of a second hand stainless steel one, either on eBay or forum classifieds.

As Brad says sounds like a bargain

Check your power steering belt is not slipping, most probably got a coating of rust on it from standing.
Exhausts are to be had easy on this site and the bay, I sold a cat back for £40 not so long ago

Rip his arm off Mate.....rare car and these are minor issues. Once done will be worth 2/3 times what you pat with a bit of TLC. As said get some pics up Bud

does the steering only make a noise when steering or all the time? It could be as simple as putting some power steering fluid in it, low fluid causes moans and harder steering

it also has a VW factory fitted push start button as it was an ex mobillity car.

Would not be factory fit, someone has added that afterwards.

If you get the car, I would be tempted to rip it out, they always give trouble plus can cause insurance hassles as they can affect the immob.

Good point mate! Would it be quite easy to get it back to key ignition?

Should be yes, just trace the wiring back and remove as required.

to check the power steering fluid just unscrew the cap on the reservoir and it has a big dipstick on it, cap should be green and located next to the battery
