Title: Procomp - 1.8T --- 1st Post
Post by: Procomp on 25 February 2012, 15:43
Hi Everyone

This is my first post for the GTI project that I've just started.  I'm building the car with the intention to make it a good road/track car, as I'd like to use it for track days during the summer.  The project is going to be a long term one, so I'll endeavour to keep my build updated as I go along.

The car is a low mileage (67k) 2 previous owners example, with a great service history.  The bodywork could do with a bit of tlc, but I'm going to think about that later and concentrate on getting it stopping, handling and going as well as it can for now

Like many of the builds here, I'm going to be following a 'typical build' programme: -

CHASSIS
312mm Brake upgrade
Coilover Kit
ARB's front/rear

ENGINE
KO3s
Full exhaust system
007P
Induction kit
Silcone hoses
Stage 2 Remap

She'll also be put on a weight loss programme, but rather than trying to do everything all in one go and not 'feel the benefit' of each of the upgrades and changes you make, I'm going to start with making her stop properly and turn corners better!

Any feedback as I go along will be welcome......

Cheers
Gregg
Title: Procomp - 1.8T ---- Pictures
Post by: Procomp on 25 February 2012, 19:08
Hi
Here's a set of pictures to show you all the car as she is at present.  I've already started to do some of the work, so will post those later, but thought you might all like to see where we're starting from: -

To be honest the bodywork looks better than it is, as both rear arches have either had some re-paint or they have faded, but I'll be doing something about that at some point in the future.  But if you look at things like the spare wheel kit, its original and had has never been used!

Look out for some future updates on the brakes that I've been working on.........

Cheers
Gregg

Title: Procomp - 1.8T ---- Brakes
Post by: Procomp on 26 February 2012, 09:56
Morning
Finished my 312mm brake conversion yesterday.  When I got the car, it has been sitting for over a year, so for the MOT, I changed the battery, as apart from that it started first time.

The brakes on the other hand were a bit shot, even after running round the block left foot braking the whole time....

To get the car through the MOT, I found some cheap disc and pads all round at Eurocar Parts.  They were especially cheap using the forum discount code.

Before - Standard GTI Set up
(http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w494/Gregg_Castree/IMG_0542.jpg)

After - 312mm Upgrad pack which included the carriers and refurbished calipers.  I purchased some Pagid discs/pads this time.

So not only have I now got a newer braking system all round, but it stops much much better.  The intention is to start with this set up and as I go through, slowly improve the braking as I begin the work on the engine, but for now, I think when I've completed the suspension work, and sorted it all out, it should be a good base to go from.

I've refitted the standard wheels for now as 16" alloys are just about ok for the big brake set up, but I'm looking at some new 18" alloys in the coming weeks to finish off the look once I've done the suspension.

Cheers

Title: Procomp - 1.8T ---- Lights & Bumper
Post by: Procomp on 03 March 2012, 07:39

Started to do the upgrade to the lights and front bumper..........

Got a set of Anniversary lights off e-bay

You can see the new light on the right hand side for a comparision
(http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w494/Gregg_Castree/IMG_0558.jpg)

Also at the same time, I pruchased a replica R32 front bumper and fitted it back on as I had the old one off to do the lights
(http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w494/Gregg_Castree/IMG_0557.jpg)

Fits really well and is made of ABS, so pretty tough. Will most likely be painting the grills as well as the bumper and will take a view once I've fitted new alloys, the coilover kit and ARB's to see what it looks like.  The intention is to get some R32 side skirts, german style plates and change the rear valance, as I'll be upgrading the exhaust system when I start work on the engine.

Any views welcome on what others have done...........

Title: Procomp - 1.8T ---- Suspension Part I
Post by: Procomp on 05 March 2012, 21:33
Hi
I've started to do the work on the suspension, which will include fitting a set of FK Konigsport coilovers and Eibech ARB's front and rear.  I've started on the rear, as it's fairly simple to remove.  Just a case of compressing the rear, undoing the damper bolt and lowering everything.  Then you just need to do the two top bolts and everything comes out.

Old Rear

New Rear - Lovely new kit

I'll post some pictures once I've fitted the rear ARB.  I'm really looking forward to getting the suspesion all done and the car back on the road, so will be working on the front over the next coule of days to get the coilovers on along with the ARB, which include dropping the subframe.

Cheers

Title: Procomp - 1.8T ---- Suspension Part II
Post by: Procomp on 07 March 2012, 22:13
Evening
Posting a couple more pictures of my rear suspension, as I've now fitted the Eibech rear ARB along with the FK kit.  Need to give it a clean and set the ride height but will do than when I've finished the front.

Oh....I did realign the mountings when I fitted the bushes so they were evenly spread out
(http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w494/Gregg_Castree/IMG_0664.jpg)

How about this for a golf with 'air ride'

Here's a sneaky peak on my new alloys!!!!!

Post by: Procomp on 10 March 2012, 18:21
Evening

Two pictures to show the difference between the old wheels and suspension v the new set up.  I'll put some more info on soon to show the transition from the standard to the FK Konigsports and new 18' alloys: -

Cheers Stevie

Still playing with the suspension as it's rubbing a bit on the ARB/drive shaft, so I'm either to low (lol) for the Eibach or some adjustable drop links will help.  Don't want to go to much higher though.

Will get the bumper and the mesh painted up black as soon as I've had some fun on a couple of track days!!

Cheers

Title: Procomp - 1.8T Update
Post by: Procomp on 04 April 2012, 17:29
Hi
Not been on here for a little while but have been working on the car still.  I've put the original bumper back on for now as I think until I get the R32 Rep done along with the side skirts and rear valance, I'll leave it standard, which doesn't look that bad now it's lowered.

Next steps are to get on with the engine, so I'm currently searching for the best place to buy a package including a FMIC, full Miltek Exhaust system, Forge 007P and associated silcone hoses, to fit alongside my KO3S and then get a remap.

If anyone has had an success in buying a package from any of the companies out there, it would be good to hear.

Cheers for now
