Title: from agu to pd.....?
Post by: GunnerCP on 24 February 2012, 18:30
Hi,
So, I'm currently breaking my MK4 AGU.... While saving for another car I thought in the meantime I might get a diesel MK4.... I've read (somewhat breifly) about the main cam issue on especially the 150 although still present on the 130's?.... is there anything else I need to be in 'fear' of? I feel like i'mwalking into a minefield regarding the commoncam issues, if a car hasnt had it done should I steer clear? short of taking the cam cover off are there any symptoms etc that its going or on its way? Is it always mileage related or can they go whenever? I read its roughly a grand to sort?

I'd be getting it remapped and also read the clutch would be on its way shortly after, I saw southbend (i think) do a single mass kit for the diesels or an upgraded kit of some sort, is this set up adisable? I'd also like a straight through downpipe with an r32 cat back with my r-line rear that I'm keeping hold of for now, how do these sound on the 150/130's?

130 or 150?

Still not sure if I should get another MK4 as I know I'd only endup modding it again....

Off to do some 'searching' now.....

Without taking the rocker cover off you would not be able to tell, I removed mine the other month and saw 'minimal' *touch wood* signs of wear.

My bro has a 130 with a miltek decat and scorpion cat back and has a little bit of a grunt when you give it the beans, sounds ok in a car park  I personally can't hear it that well. However I cannot comment on the R32 set up...but man that would be one sick looking diesel

As for the clutch...I just remapped mine with it putting out nearing 300lbft and I am having no slipping after 120k  :lipsrsealed: But I think I will be saving for a replacement OEM clutch set up, perhaps a sachs uprated clutch at most!

thanks..... just trying to decide what varient to go for now..... 130/150/anni...?

either black or red I think.... r-line rear is metallic black already so that would be handy

I hear if I fit a decat then the new mot rules i'd have to swap it back as there was a cat fitted as standard? a bit long but I suppose I could do that......

who mapped yours? how many miles has it done post map?

is there anything else I shoud look out for other than the usual cambelt changes? If its got a decent service history (ideally full vw) then i'm not too concerned about mileage (well, up to about 120k ish I think) I've been reading about the VNT cleaning and whatnot too, whichever one I buy (possibly) I'll be plugging it in to vcds to scan for codes too then doing some removing and cleaning of parts! :)

Only different problems the tdi 150/130 suffer compared to the 1.8T's is the cams. Thats about it. The engines are pretty good its just everything else around it.

My car was remapped at 70k, cams went at 115k, flywheel/clutch at 145k and turbo at 153k. Car is now on 166k.
No one really knows yet as the rules haven't been fully introduced and even then it depends on the tester.

ok, everything else i'm not so bothered about..... knowing my luck i'd buy it then have cam issues a month or so after.....

I'll take a lok around and see whats going, wouldnt object to one slightly modified already.....  again, depending on service history/receipts etc

indeed, sounds like it..... i suppose you pay your money and take the chance....!

it'd be a frustrating way to spend a grand after buying a 'new' car though.....
