well got the mk3 yesterday and all was well but put my audio in which is a good weight and now the rear is noisy as owt over bumps and also when cornering or accelerating ?? i think its just the wheels catching the plastic arch as scrub marks on tyre and had a friend bounce rear and they touched near bottom, long term goals are to lowering the car but funds been eaten by purchase and insurance and fact needs a gearbox mount doing but anything to save my tyres and my ears would be much appreciated!!!
its a mk3 gti and is sat on 17 inch audi s3 alloys

Arch modifications are going to be necessary to keep 17" wheels from scrubbing on a mk3, especially if youre planning on lowering it.
-
I dunno, I ran some god awful 17s early on in my mk3 ownership on a lowered car, never had any issue with them rubbing at all...
I couldn't now, my springs seemed to have sagged over the years. Perhaps that is the issue here? Although having half a ton of ICE in the boot won't help matters.
Is the car lowered at all?
-
no its standard height at min and yes i have a heavy install in back :embarassed:  also have 3 kids such weight aint health i know think you may be onto something about the springs sagging though
-
You could always get some hard coilovers but leave it the standard hight
-
thats long time plan just skinto as only brought it yest and with insurance its killed me a lil
-
What size are the tyres
-

Good call mate

wrong size you need 205/40/17
-
Yup. mine are 205/40/17s
Rubbed like f**k on 225s..... But on 205s standard or lowered it was fine!
-
I am guessing you have 225/45's in which case they will always rub, I ran 205/40/17's on mine all ok but I did have to trim the rear arch lip a little.
-
lol sorry they are 205s was a lil bit tiddly last night lol
-
as wayne said you need to trim ur arch plastics a little, i'm running 17s and got my back wheels tucked and get no rubbage (unless on a really bad road) and i've got a big sub box etc etc
-
well went down the scrappy this morn and got 2 rear strut assembly's (springs and shocks) and swapped them over still get a bit of rub but nothing like before im happy to say!!! had a leaking damper so all fun,
flash where you from and u able to help me sometime do a bit of shaving ???
