Title: my few problems any input appreciated guys.
Post by: JoshyBoyGTI on 23 February 2012, 18:29
hi i have a mk2 gti 8v 1992 and these are my two problems.

1. when i start the idle will move from 1000 rpm to 1150rpm and will do so until it either settles or a give it a few revs then it reverts down to 1000rpm it then stays there. ive though about purchasing a new idle control valve.

2. sometimes when i start my car it wont turn the starter i remove key and try a few times then it fires into life its done this twice its like the battery is dead at first but this has been checked aswell as alternator im thinking dodgy starter need replacing?

3. my oil light buzzer has started coming on random but like for 1 or 2 secs i checked oil level a few times when this happened and it was bang on the right level. it did it again today and stayed on till i turned car on and off. i checked the level and was low weird? no oil leak or anything so ive topped it up a bit today so im monitoring this problem.

little niggly bits but i like to get things sorted.

many thanks in advance.

1) Definably sounds like an Idle issues, Change the ICV and clean out your throttle body, should cure it.
2)Take the starter out, if your able grease the bendix mechanism, on older cars they can get stuck, play around with it to loosen it.
3)Do a compression test as you could be burning oil, is there any  blue smoke coming out the exhaust.

Ignition switches are also a common fault. When it's not starting, give the key a wiggle when trying to start and see if it makes a difference. Oil Buzzer is for pressure. Does it happen above or below 2.5k rpm? (think there are two as well on the 8v  :undecided:) could just be a pressure sensor.

8v has 2 sensors aswell. ones got the connector different on the front. (high pressure one i think)
