Title: mayo on oil cap filler
Post by: forsh on 23 February 2012, 17:14
not run my vr for 5 days and did a little check today ,check oil cap and oil dipstick, needed about 1 liter oil,did oil change about 3 months ago

there was a little mayo on the oil cap filler

ive not run my car for 5 days and when i do run it i only drive 35 km per day monday to friday

coolant is ok,doesnt get above 90oc
oil very rare goes above 95oc on hot days

it winter here in finland and its been minus 10 and minus 20 some days
last few days its been only minus 5 max and today when i check the car its plus 1 plus 2oc

is it the gasket or is it i only run small journey etc

the coolant in the expansion tank looks clean

Could well just be like moisture build up, pretty common. Not sure how you would tell if it is just general build up or the head gasket though

1 litre of oil lost in 3 months would suggest something is wrong mate
It's must be leaking somewhere! Get the head checked asap and work from there

don't worry to much mate its the condensation the engine produces on warm up it mixes with the oil but not a problem just clean your breather system and should be ok for a while mine does it .....thanks Rik

1L in 3 months is a lot, but the hondas i work on, as a new engine they are allowed to burn up to 1L per 600miles before it requires work done on it,  allthough they dont burn that much, if you think that is the allowable limmit, yours is likely well below that (i know honda/vw is very diffrent) but the point is, your proabably fine,  cold engines burn more due to components being loose which doesnt help,  a bit of mayo is also normal after short trips, clean it up, take her for a damn good thrashing, if it returns during a hot run worry, if its gone, all should be fine.

1lt every 3 months does not seem too high for a vr which use quite a lot to be honest.
you will get mayo on short runs for sure. let your car warm up each morning before driving and give it a foot full should stop the condensation building inside the cap
