I'm poor so I'm going for the cheapest smart phone which would be HTC 3D EVO
I wanted to know anyone has one and what issues they had?
I don't care for the 3D apps I just want it as a smart phone with a fast core.
Asda are selling it for £229
I've hunted everywhere and I would have to spend at least £300 for a decent phone
This is someone who still owns a Magic GEN1
Issues around mid of last year on the phone:
Phone getting warm when talking and charging?
Screen could get black death i.e blue screen of death?
Battery lasts 14 hours as a phone 3D usage and playback 3 hours
TBH my magic is three and half years old but has done a good job!
So is it worth it @ £229 for a dual core smart phone?
I have android on the Magic and wanted to know will I still have sat nav like my google phone on it?
I would be lost without that app hence me reluctantly holding on to my Magic

Can't you get someone to send you one from HK? Cheaper and better phone.
-
No Jon phone tech is more expensive than here due to the fact they were the last to get a decent 3G hardware and China's restrictions to the web.
In HK they tend to sting you line rental and hardware even though they are made from there!
We are seeing protectionism gains in the East to protect the domestic market itself!
Even if I could get one it would be about the same price with shipping, plus if it goes tits up back home, the consumer rights well lets just say real poor
-
Well Carphone warehouse wanted £439 did spend half an hour playing with it and its quick but has the important sat nav app from google great bit of kit the sat nav!
Vodaphone didn't even sell it!
Dialphone contracts
Asda mobile £440 :lipsrsealed:
Amazon £273.00
Play.com £447.00
Ebay £270+
Asda direct online pick it up at local store £229 Can't go wrong!
1Gig Ram, Dual core, 8GB SD card, 4.3-inch 3D touch screen, 3D camera and video recording!
My phone is ready on the 1st March can't wait!
Getting a 1900Mah extra battery should help with the 1700 crap HTC one!
Happy days!

Yeah Asda must have bought thousands back in November and need to get rid it was £250 last month then £229!
Two things
need a 1900Mah battery
Screen protector and case
I'll provide a link thats seems to be fan boys EVO 3D club! They even stuck Windows and office start on them
Someone has over clocked there by 1.8ghz via apps cache kernals Root blah blah stuff I will learn how to at somepoint!
It is a very good phone, just not sure about the 3D gimmickery
True Jay I don't care for 3D, but when I'm being asked for £400-£500 for a simular phone plus I watched a GS2 vs EVO vid the difference is small considering the GS2 is still £450 odd! Mine is £229 saving of £221 in theory if I can O/C to 1.8ghz plus bigger battery it would be a quicker phone all round?

Here is the vid for the face off on GS2 vs EVO 3D! GS2 wins but at £221 less in price plus O/C you tell me which is a better phone?

It'll be fast enough out of the box, OC'ing will make it marginally quicker, the S2SD (System 2 SD) trick might make more difference - depending on the SD card speed (£60 for a decent speed/capacity card).
I'd rather get a solar charger or battery back thing that plugs into the charging port to boost the battery a bit and a bunch of USB Micro-B cables and a Car USB Charger

TBH I dont know much about internal and external mem usage configerations stuff I just planned on getting a 16GB SD as a spare for movies and business files? The O/Cing seemed to make it quicker but in reality it was marginal, but the tests were inconsistant on the vid!
Everyone said the back plate on the EVO is flimsy and felt like it could snap off by changing the battery all the time, this is why I thought one charge to last the whole day and night I'm happy! I won't be gaming, proberly wouldn't even stream much, but the sat nav I've already got car charger for the Magic which is a micro USB charger I don't have to buy any other stuff if going from HTC to HTC
I'm shocked people haven't bought one yet I've had my magic for three years because of the costs of Iphones!!!
-
Under clocking will help with battery life and a program like Timeriffic that can control your wifi, gps, sound profiles, bluetooth etc so you can save a bit of extra battery power there and have it all turn on / off ready for when you leave the house or work.
-
Thats a good idea mate! I've seen the app they use to control the clock speeds and it looks like it can defo be underclocked!
I'm going to give the phone to the misses to muck about she plays with phones more than I she can test it out for me as working my magic can die slowly I should post a picture of what a three year phone looks like
-
a friend has recently gone from a 1st Gen Magic to an iphone4 - should have seen the state of it! still worked fine though!
-
Well I got it just now
Its so smooth compared to my GEN1
I'm off to a meeting now so havent fully tested it the contact battery cover boogled me thought it was broken
Hopefully new case will arrive £20.00  better be made from gold!
No instruction book just the way I like it
-
Well little update!
The buttons at the bottom are very sensitive pressing them by accident has happened many times!
The battery pannel is so flimsy unless you pop every catch it can easily be unflush to the body of the phone!
3D rocks and is not bad gave my misses a headache after an hour of spiderman LOL!
Only one grip I transfered some ringtones and had to place them directly into a new folder with the other music folders.
I need an app to access all folders and dir's not sure which one to use.
I need a ad blocker for the webkit otherwise thinking of sticking on firefox on it opinions?
Ad blocker plus only works on firefox browser?
Any other suggestions would be greatly received
thanks
Jay

There's an Adblocker app in the Market I used to use, needed to be rooted to use it though. I removed it because Google told me off :lipsrsealed:
Doesn't the standard Music app find all music files throughout the system? I know the CM one does and sure the HTC Sense 2.1 that came with the Legend did  If not it doesn't hurt to be half organised and keep it all in one place
-
Jay what do you think about rooting it like this heard its safer?

Revolutionary unlocks the bootloader (HBOOT), allowing you to flash a custom ROM - if you want to root the current ROM you'll need to find another method or use one of the temp roots out there, probably already on XDA-developers. I rooted my mothers with Revolutionary and now it's been a PITA to put the original HBOOT back on so she can get the latest official HTC update as she didn't want a custom ROM in the end

So Jay whats going to be quick simple back up my old Rom and switchable, so many apps need the phone to be rooted!
did you fix you're mothers phone in the end or is it still running the Rev?

I've just being contemplating Revolutionary for my buggy Sensation which is shockingly unstable at the moment, is it really worth doing and how difficult?
P.s. I've been running one of those Anker 1900 mAh batteries for about 9 months now, definitely better but still could do with a touch more umph tbh.
-
Thanks for that bit of info mate!
I did find a 1975Mah for £6.00 odd, but it looked like it came from China.
The battery I wanted is a Mugen one, but they are about £25-£30 suposedly 60% more power than the OEM one? sold out every where in the UK?
If you try it mate let me know how it goes because the phone is still new I'm tempted to either wait for ICS if it ever gets it? Or do it in a couple of months with researching it out properly we need someone in teh uk to say whats best per phone?
-
Not sorted my mothers phone because I never have it long enough at my place to try everything I want, it's the fact it's a non-rooted ROM that's not letting me do what I want and to fix it I probably have to install a rooted ROM them go back to a standard ROM, other someother command line wizardary
-
Jay I'm going to stick gingerbread 2.3.3 on the Magic the phone is redundant so dont care if I brick it, wanna help me or point me into the right direction I've been reading XDA but really don't know where to start?
I've downloaded the android SDk already!
-
Will have a looksie for you
-
The Magic isn't on XDA anymore or I'm missing it :undecided:
Found it under Legacy devices!

Cool!
I'm following this guide but have come across two problems!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529062 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529062)
1) There is no fastboot download for the G1 there is a G2 and other devices!
2) just sign up to http://www.htcdev.com/ (http://www.htcdev.com/) to get the bootloader unlocking.
3) I need something called ADB found a note on the SDK install package just reads
The adb tool has moved to platform-tools/
If you don't see this directory in your SDK,
launch the SDK and AVD Manager (execute the android tool)
and install "Android SDK Platform-tools"
Please also update your PATH environment variable to
include the platform-tools/ directory, so you can
execute adb from any location.
Lost at this stage LOL!
Okay going to do this!

You familiar with the command prompt?
That's where you use ADB, you'll need to CD (Change Directory) to it like
cd "c:\program files\Android SDK PATH where you installed it\tools folder\"
then you use can ADB as described in the tutorials.
You looked at CM's root?

The Cyanogen Recovery.img is no longer maintained. You should replace it with a custom recovery image. There are two custom recovery images available for the Magic: Amon_Ra's and ClockworkMod.
ClockworkMod needs more ram than the magic can handle! :undecided:
-
Okay jay found this need a walk through the last one obsolete!
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-magic/ (http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-magic/)
Okay I have a recovery img now saved!
On the sdk manager which one do i install? android 2.?
I have adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
fastboot.exe
Can't mount fastboot onto the menu from SDK need help!
-
Well its been a fun few days!
Got everything downloaded and the dam thing just won't give me access to the root!
In Dos command it just can't find the device or fastboot!
Have all three files, usb drivers are correct just won't hook into it?
I think the last update on the firmware has closed the loop and I need to some how flash it do a lower firmware
:undecided:
-
Have you uninstalled HTC Sync? You're meant to install it to get the drivers loaded, then uninstall the HTC Sync program so it doesn't interferer with the rooting process, it will leave the drivers installed.
-
The issue is no device is being detected
ADB no device?
Hardware detection (device manager) HTC its there, but can't hook up to device with ADB?
I think I need a driver specific or its my USB cable there are some issues that people have found simular, but I dont have the time to dick about its supoosed to be simples but the hardware and software are giving me grief!
Set the phone into USB debuggin mode
Installed HTC drivers for Magic and EVO both tried failed.
Fastboot is on the phone got that far, but cannot hook or sync for that matter?
SD card I can access just not the fastboot!
Tried mounting unmounting tried force stopping the DOS shell and rebooting nada?

I'd try another cable if you have one, I'd have installed HTC Sync 2 for the drivers, removed the HTC Sync program.
Once the wrong drivers installed it's a PITA to get the correct drivers on, are you using XP?
Search USB Brick for your phone, might help find a way to revert to different drivers.

Okay I'm trying to use the APK flash method Jay and right away it states back up failed?
Last chance saloon super oneclick method this has to work????
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682)
Yeah rooted third method works a treat custom roms here I come!!!!!!
Haaa it worked for about one recovery boot!
I can't get to the manual boot to load roms now?
I took a risk to use clockwork ROM manager and it rooted its self in the phone as a super user things were going so well!
-
Make sure you have the clockworkmod update.zip file on your SD card when going into recovery
-
What zip doc was that from? Clockwork generated or the custom Rom?
One other thing when it does system wipe what does it actually wipe? because my issue is if it does a wipe will clockwork just recover with the new rom after boot?
Just relalised Clockwork mod doesn't work.
It can't manually update the actuall reset was Android stock reset menu.
Back to looking for a another recovery program.
I still think the issues are the radio and SL versions if I can flash them down to lower version all would be good in theory?
-
You need the clockworkmod update.zip for your phone (I don't think they're universal files) which your phone will boot into when you hold down the key combo when power it on and go into the recovery menus. After that you will go into the Clockworkmod recovery where you can do a 'nandroid' type backup as it's called and flash new ROMs.

Jay it just doesn't work on the magic G1 Ram issues!
I have super user previlages now, but finding a decent Rom flash manager is the issue!
I've tried going back to SDK DOS route but my comp just cannot locate the device for direct manipulation!
Clockwork is too much for the G1
Any other suggestion? The CM requires via USB so stuck as I can only use the superuser rooted method?
-
If I had the time to sort it out I'd say send it to me, but I don't have much spare time
The only other thing I can suggest is trying another XP PC to see if it recognises it or struggle to get the drivers off your current pc.
-
Its not a big thing mate, but I've wasted so much time the only good thing is I can run rooted apps now from the market!
I'll try the lads comp later! :undecided:
-
ASDA have just reduced the phone now £207
Jay get one now!!
-
Nah, my phone still works well and I'll be jumping ship from Android to Windows Phone later this year :lipsrsealed:
