Title: occasonal crunchy first gear, gearbox options
Post by: dub-gti on 23 February 2012, 13:03
hi all. not ;osted for a while, but now and again i get a crunchy 1st gear from reverse, now im still to observe under what conditions this happens, as its only happened a few times.

if its not the clutch and turns out to be a gear box, what gb can i fit? i want bottom end, top end isnt needed for me as i rarely reach 70mph on the roads, and the only long travelling i do is in the summer to the coast, or if and when i go to a national car meet.

so 90% of the year im mostly driving no more then 40/60mph (short dual carage way 1/4/-1/2 mile) and as i live in a suburbun town/ village, most if not all roads ar 30 mph.

will the kr box fit from a 8v? or is there other options? 1.4?

I would start with an oil change,  i recommend castrol synthetic, helps syncros out a bit.   At this stage i wouldnt be thinking too far into a new box.

ok cheers, gotta change the engine oil, swap a pas pump and new oil there so may as well do all 3 at once. least now its had a real full service, along with the plugs leads and cap!

i know what you ment, im saying ive got to change the engine oil any way, and sort the pas pump out so dropping the gb oil too wouldnt be much more hassle along the way.

also i find the gears are stiff first thing in the morning, so kinda thinking oil too!

ah i see, well i might be swapping over to a vr6 in a few months, so the way i see it, i only use 1st to pull away (obviously)
so ill do a oil change and see how it feels. if it was 3rd etc i may of had to look in to gb swap or just miss that gear

The synros on my passat were totally fudged... then i put in castrol fully synth .. available from halfords, its about £12.00 per 1L but works wonders, i did run ATF in the manual box, which is silky smooth, but it worried me due to the bearing issues the passat boxes have, so i used this castrol and its as good as perfect, and i honnestly couldnt get it into 1st unless i stopped and double de-clutched, even then it was hard, Now its almost as new, accept when very very cold, then its notchey.  So i honnestly belive in your box it will put an end to your issues for many thousands of miles.

Also... get a tube of molyslip, its in a pink/white tube (also in halfords) about £9ish  it works abolsute wonders,  keeps the bearings quite and helps the selctors slip,  add it to the oil before you put it in or squirt it directly into the box. it stopped my 2nd gear whine in its tracks.
