Title: golf mk2 suspension mounts
Post by: lord14 on 22 February 2012, 20:30
had it on axle stands when i first brought it and noticed alot of play in the top mounts so changed them both and solved the problem only wobbles slightly , could this be due to how the coilovers are set ? as its pretty low maybe if i highered it up will that push the top mount up , and the top bolts are tight thanks rob

Hmm!

What coilovers and top mounts do you have?

Wobbly top mounts is not good.

Pics?

apparently vr6 coilovers and i brought the 1.8gti top mounts can it be that the car is set to low and the springs arent compressed enough ?

Well. Coilovers, for wan't of a better phrase, are a unit.

Damper plus spring on an adjustable thread.

So at its maximum length ( or whatever you have it set to ) should be long enough to support the wheel with the full weight of the car, and not rub the arches.

Do your wheels rub the arches?  How much of a gap is there?

The only way the strut would be loose is if the wheel was right up in the arch and the top of the wheel was resting on the inner arch, thereby taking the pressure of the top mount, and instead putting it onto the top of the wheel arch.  Unlikely.

I suspect that you've just wrongly fitted top mounts or loose strut-to-hub bolts.

Unless someone else can enlighten you.

Well it could be that you've got shoddy springs on there, or just generally crap coilovers.  Whith coilovers cheap = crap.

Have you got a budget to sort this out. Maybe new springs and Mk2 G60 top mounts.

Or some new Boge Turbo gas shocks and Eibach springs.
