The Mk2's been in the pits for a week or so having a suspension refit, a service and other little bits and bobs. My mechanic reckons it has a high lift cam which explains why it sounds a bit chuggy at tickover even though it's as sweet as a nut on the road.
Could one of you experts out there explain what the high lift cam is please? Why would a previous owner have fitted one? Why does it make the engine a bit chuggy on tickover? etc. etc.
Sorry if these are dumb questions but I consider this as all part of my Mk2 education and you are all contributing my learning.
By the way I've had the car on ramps - it's as clean as a whistle underneath and now it's running on standard suspension with fully refurbed wheels it looks a cracker
(Anyone want any second hand Koni springs and dampers by the way?)

the cams in the head. they'll have a bigger lobe to keep the valves open for a longer duration to get more air and fuel in and out the cylinder quicker. you gain power from it, normally u buy other mods to go with the cam though

I thought as such.
Mods such as?

might not have any. but balanced crank, lightened flywheel. panel filter. 4 branch exhaust manifold. thats to name a few. on there own they dont really achieve much

For a start you would be looking at induction and exhaust modifications. Its fair enough having it open for longer but if the air isnt there its fairly pointless, same applies on restrictions on getting rid of exhaust gasses

headwork  16v's really like a bit of headwork to go with a cam
-
It's certainly not got an induction mod. I'll ask my mechanic to look atthe other bits

It's a bit like hiring a hooker with a massive gob and you having a small c0ck.

Of course not Jay.
it was a simple analogy to highlight the fallacy of having and engine with "good breathing" and crap other stuff.
Me love you long time.
