Title: Steam Explosion!!
Post by: keefusg60 on 23 May 2005, 10:52
HELP:

My recently acquired Golf G60 just blew a load of steam into my face, fortunately as I was only going about 5mph.
Managed to pull over despite not being able to see where I was going, and left it by the roadside.
Any ideas on what may have happened??

Cheers

Engine could have overheated and blown a waterpipe? This happened on my old 1.3. There was a broken wire on my fan plug which meant the fan didnt kick in and the pressure blew a tiny hole in one of the pipes. Really hard to see and didnt leak until the car got up to temp.

Did the steam come from the heater vents ? if so , it sounds like the heater matrix has blown .
VW did do them on warranty but not sure if they still do . All mk2s had a recall sometime ago .  If they don't do that anymore it's not a bad job.
Matrix'es are around £30-40 and the book time for doing them is 2 hours although I've managed to get that down to 45mins ( I have done a lot of them ! )

Fan was still going round, so think is probably Heater Matrix.
Didn't renew my AA cover, coz they doubled my renewal in April.

Need to get it towed to G-Werks in Littlehampton I think, and get her sorted and fully checked out.
Only had it for 3 weeks.

Just spoke to VW to see if the heater matrix is still covered under warranty, and they said that the recall is now closed, and shouldn't have caused any such fault.
Anyone know of any info contrary to their response??

Cheers.

The warranty may well be closed but I don't see how they can say that a blown / leaking matrix hasn't caused this .
The mod that was done to most if not all mk2s was to fit a bypass valve linking the supply and return pipes for the heater which would come in to effect if the coolant temperature increased above a certain level ( ie shut off supply to the heater ) a shield and an 'L' shaped piece of foam was also installed inside the car to prevent hot coolant from spraying on to the occupants .
If the matrix was leaking then it for a new one  ( which I assume was strengthened )  was changed instead of doing the mod.
I have found out only in the last few days that the bypass valve has been discontinued !   RATHER ODD I THOUGHT but you can make of it what you will !!
