Title: mk2 1.8 8v - Possible carburetor fault
Post by: bobbarley on 20 February 2012, 20:11
Evening chaps, my first dive into this part of the forum!

I've seen a mk2 1.8 8v for sale going cheap.  Seller says that it using a lot of fuel.  He's been to a couple of garages and they're all said it's because of the carburetor.

Question is, does that sound like a reasonable explanation of the problem?  If so, how much would I be looking at to get the carburetor replaced, second hand if it keeps the price down.

Hard to say Bob but ECU and earths are a good start as they overfuel due to a dodgy ECU its like a default map to enrich to be safe!
So it has a webber? What engine block code does it have?

Yeah WAX stat on a Pierburg vac pipes even leaking gaskets!
It being near the coast I would worry more about rust around the arches and under the wing.
Salty air and MK2 don't mix

You have noticed its French and LHD, haven't you?

Ad also says 1.8i, they did a 1.8 spi over on the continent I think.

Yep, we want a LHD car for the banger rally we're doing over in Europe

If we can fix it cheap, and I really do mean cheap, then I'd consider keeping it and doing it up properly over time.

1.8i

monopoint injection    rip it off  strap a webber on there and swap a carbed dizzy on if needs be  it'll go a hell of a lot better.

its probaly just a temp sensor  but spi  was so crap its against the law of golf to try and fix it
