Title: Rain sensors
Post by: ScottA on 20 February 2012, 18:27
This may be really stupid question but I haven't had a car with rain sensors before, how do they deal with ice?

For example, if I start the car and the windscreen is all iced up, is there any risk of the car trying to use the wipers and fecking them up, especially if they are stuck to the windscreen?

Frozen snow on the windscreen as another example.

Cheers,
Scott

To activate the auto wipers, you need to have the switch in the old intermitant position, so you can turn them completely off if you need to.

The rear wipe could be more of a problem, as it auto wipes when you select reverse if the front wipers are turned on. I've disabled that feature on mine using VCDS.

i always leave mine off. they can go off randomly and smear crap all over the screen which is  annoying

^+1, coz they rarely seem to wipe when you need them to. I tend to use the manual flick wipe function, which means you have control. Would I pay for rain sensing wipers if it was a cost-option on the Golf? NO I wouldn't.

You will soon find that the wipers n the golf are a joke. The skip and judder and flap around and in auto they just do whatever they want. Best to just leave them off and rain x the windscreen!

I leave mine on without any problems.  I don't think they actviate when you start the car first time as I don't have the problem you're refering to.

I alway keep them on and I havent had any issues.

They don't activate until you are moving when you have just started the car.
5-7mph at a guess.

+1, no issues. These are a great safety feature if you get a lorry going the other way down a country road and its pissing down as the bow wave that suddenly covers your car is automatically gone from the screen before you have even touched the wiper controls. This has happened a few times now.

When I first had auto wipers on my ED30 I left them on and while scrapping the ice of the windows with engine running as I cleared the ice off the screen where the sensor is the wipers moved automatically. You have to be quick so that the wipers don't bite  I noticed my wife did this with the car recently. I turn them off now when its snowy and icy.

'Sort of' on topic, but...

I can't explain it but, when I had my Bora with rain sensors I thought they were pretty crap, never really worked when it rained and would occasionally wipe the screen in scorching sunlight! Had a cheap replacement windscreen at one point ('Smile' windscreens.... never heard of them and distorted view at edges of screen! Wouldn't recommend) due to insurance claim and still the rain sensors were rubbish..... Had the screen replaced again weeks before I sold the car by Autoglass and the sensors now worked a treat, always wiped whenever needed, I would reach for the stalk and just before I got there the wipers would whoosh across the screen. As I say.... Can't explain it, perhaps quality of the glass?? Perhaps the Autoglass fitter cleaned the sensor before replacement? Who knows??
Personally I find the Mk IV rain sensor pretty good, it *will* occasionally wipe the screen at odd times, but on the whole they're spot on.
