Title: Mk2 gti 8v running rough and slightly under powered
Post by: busterdub on 20 February 2012, 15:57
Hi all

My 8v is running and sounds like its a john dear tractor, it idles fine, but it's very lump under acceleration and seem to have lost power, sometimes just for a brief second it goes like it should, is something loose? I thought it was the throttle body gasket as heard a slighty sucking noise when setting off plus I changed the body as the switches were goosed! Even check the plugs... Any pointers?

Had this sort of thing with mine, check your leads as one had mine had broken in 2 places within the rubber on my valver, also check your coil, as again had sparks coming from mine which also resulted in a jumpy ride as and when it felt like it, when you put the foot down it holds back and is hesitant.. Check all air pipes are connected from  the air box etc also

Cracked exhaust manifold?

Cracked exhaust manifold?
May be? The exhaust note has changed, and has become very 'poppy' at the outlet.....

Have a feel around the back of the engine, dont touch the downpipe/manifold but if it is cracked you should be able to feel the exhaust gases escaping.

If its a digi 8v it might benefit from a new blue coolant sensor and a tune up as per rj's guide.. Can be quite critical to the running of the digi's. A mates 8v banged popped and had no power until a good sort out

We're can I find this guide?

Check the manifold and it's not blowing?

check very carefully the rubber intake hose for cracks, also mine has a similar problem traced mine tobe the inlet manifold gasket causing her to run lean. On mine i kept trying to seal the intake hose aS when i slightly held it at the back the squeeling stopped! This is due to the weight on the seal by putting weight on the inlet manifold,

Currently remedied by some tight rope till i can be bothered to change it!

Just tried the inlet manifold it isn't that as its solid and made no difference..... But I did noticed a clear liquid on manifold near the injectors and the exhaust flumes smells of fuel

To check if the sensor is faulty just unplug it and see if it runs any differently. Its here.....

sounds defintiely like injector seals to me, easy enough to replace with care

I disconnected the blue coolant sensor this morning before work and the engine almost died! And have noticed the temp gauge only gets off the cold section of the gauge....thinking this maybe my problem??

Right had abit of time on the car today, checked out the seals on the injectors and changed for new....then changed out the thermostat....temp issue sorted.....still no joy with the running issue so I did the blue coolant thing and the car was running ok so I thought I would go on a test was abit rough but then was back to its normal self!! Happy days!! but then 20 mins it the drive boom problem was back I have done the blue coolant thing another time and it 50/50 so stopped again and adjusted now its running bad......any ideas? Break in the cable somewhere? Cheers rich
