Title: Any Nice MK1 Enthusiasts willing to help a female in need????
Post by: Victorialou on 22 May 2005, 21:46
Hi there all,

I've been in the states for 2 years and have just come back, started work and had little money to buy a car.  Trying to keep this short, I travelled North to view a MK1 GTI 8v (1982) loved it, purchased it and 400 or so miles / 8 days later the car decides to die on me on a three lane major traffic light roundabout.  My worst nightmare happened today.  Anyway, nice policemen pushed my car off the road and I promptly got recovery to take me back home.  I don't want to get angry with my new car, but what could be wrong?  It tries to start/turns over but wont ignite.  Its as though there is no fuel in the tank.  Immobilizer is all fine.  Could be just a lead come loose someone suggested or a faulty plug, now I cant open the bonnet to see.
Still remaining as calm as I can be without 100 proof liquor.

My question is: Does anyone know any decent mechanics located in the Camberley area.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated & thanks for your time in reading this.

I've had same sort of experience with my black golf only 4 weeks ago. I did the following and it worked, but I'm not saying that this may be it, but it could be.

Fuel not getting to engine.

What to do?
Un-screw the fuel cap and if you hear a sound of air being released, you have air in your fuel lines. This can be sorted out with taking off the injection fuel lines and trying to start car - this should then push the air out and pump fuel to the engine properly. Then tighten up fuel line cables to injection unit and it should start again.

I would get someone who knows cars or a garage to do this - as this envolves fuel.

It could also be a wire has come off the engine or the timing - distrub has moved. It's hard to say without seeing the car and checking a few bits out.

Same thing happened to me last year in my Mk1, and it was a faulty Fuel Pump Relay Switch. Only cost me about £15 from GSF, and easy to replace yourself. May be worth trying for the sake of £15.

Thank God it wasnt the Meadows R'bout, it was Basingstoke Centre so only a notch below in my opinion.  I'll keep you posted if I cannot manage to get it fixed by when you return on Weds.  I am actually in Sandhurst, so thats probably even better for you distance wise.

Cheers for the quick reply richandhazel.

Victoria.

Yeah, Sandhurst is even closer, just a couple of miles. Text or call me on 07957 442131 if you're still stuck on Wednesday. Otherwise I'll look out for your mk1............You'll more often than not find me down the Dog & Partridge pub in Yateley

Total thumbs up to Alex (Redbaron), within 24 hours of posting my woes, Alex came to my rescue and fixed the car.  It turned out to be a blown fuse for the fuel pump I think he said.
Many thanks for your help Alex, much appreciated

Victoria.

PS: RichandHazel, I am all fixed up now and back on the road.  However I want to thank you for your kind offer to come round and rectify the problem.  I'll keep your number though - The car is as old as me, I have problems too  so should any more arise with the VW I'll be texting you or Alex for your expert help again - so long as thats alright with you?

Thanks to all those who responded.  Happy girl now!

No problem, anytime!

a nice mk1 by the way, but just a note, noticed some rust coming through on the inner wings (when/if you open the bonnet, follow the line of the wing up towards the windscreen, there is a cavity below the screen - the outer walls of that) and also i had a quick peek at the sills which also have some surface patches which if caught now-ish will be ok.

Quite refreshing to see a young professional female with some taste in cars!

If you need it servicing or anything dont hesitate to ask!

Oh and a gear-linkage bush kit from GSF in Farnham is about £15 which will sort out your soggy box (oooh errr missus )

Just to clarify - was the fuse for the fuel pump relay (later spec relay?)

 :grin

I had noticed that the gearbox was a bit sloppy, but put it down to the fact I had been driving a delightful* 1.2 Punto rental car for a while with smooth everything prior to buying the golf.

If a gear linkage kit is only 15pounds then having that changed could be your next task, if you like.

I am not sure what to do about the rust, bearing in mind that I anticipate heading back to the states in about 3 months and will be selling it.  Have to have a ponder on that one.

I believe it has been serviced recently, but I will check the oil condition and have that done in addition to the gear linkage change.
Oh, I dont think I can, its a two person job to open that bonnet, remember?

Cheers again for your help Alex, let me know your availability.
