Post by: AD1.8T on 18 February 2012, 19:43

Soldering iron melts plastic lol i done it when it was on the bumper taped it down so it cant move made a 3/4 mm channel with the iron the plastic that curls up on the edge push back in melts some spare plastic in the gap do the channel thing again ...... Its quite easy when your doing it to be honest

Yeah i knew i didnt know where to put the plate but i done it anyway and deal with that when it comes to it im probally gunna get a sticker numberplate and put it on the top left of the windscreen (passenger) atleast then its visable to the "po-po" lol i put my numberplate there and it didnt look to bad  :lipsrsealed:

There ampr cameras csnt see theough glass ( i dont think) hence the sticker idea atleast then i can say ive put it on the side of the car thats most visable and hopefully blag my way out of it being extremely polite cause its enevitable i will get pulled lol

COPIED OFF UK-MKIVS

Bit of an update i didnt like my plastic welds as i took the strip off and they were abit flexi so put a strip of fiberglass on the rear to strengthen it up abit and its done the trick will put another layer of weave on tomoz rather than the matt i used today and it will be industructable ...... When its on the car lol also i was planning on blending the spraying i do in but i had a proper inspection of the bumper there was loads of bodgy chip repairs and dents from stones so i thought F*** it il spray the whole lot :) ive sprayed mirrors grilles and spoilers before and theyve all come out very good so hopefully the bumper will be just as good (famous last words) Also ive attempted to smooth out the groove on the golf strip ......

Why oh why do people screw number plates on there was 6 in total !!!!
My plan of attack is going to be;

2 layers of plastic primer

1200 grit it flat

Filler primer where needed

1200 gritt flat

2 more layers of primer then flat back again

2 layers of colour then flat with 1500

2 layers of colour then flat with 2000 gritt

3/4 coats of laquer flat again and polish the shizen out of it !!!

What do you reckon anni valance or a new black one

Little update on this
Bumper primered
(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab25/yellowmgzr/Mobile%20Uploads/8ad642d9.jpg)

More fiddling with rubstrip
(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab25/yellowmgzr/Mobile%20Uploads/81fb0417.jpg)

2 coats of paint
(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab25/yellowmgzr/Mobile%20Uploads/171e13a8.jpg)

I wasnt happy with the rubstrip so i picked up a complete bumper of ebay for 99p to be able to use my car and have another attempt at the rubstrip
(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab25/yellowmgzr/Mobile%20Uploads/7009480a.jpg)

This time ive cut the recess out of my old rubstrip and used jb weld to stick it on ! Then im going to counter sink some screws in for the sake of it really even though the jb weld is strong enough sand it flush then shape it all up with bumper filler

Freshen up these
(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab25/yellowmgzr/Mobile%20Uploads/eebd97f8.jpg)
It litterally just fell in the bumper which i was happy about (no hammer this time)

you sprayed a whole bumper with rattle cans? blimey thats a good job. you must of polished the sh!t out of it to get that orange peel out!
Title: Re: DIY U.S Rubstrip 100% finished
Post by: AD1.8T on 17 March 2012, 18:19
Na mate you cant polish orange peel out if its in the paint on metalic i done 3/4 coats sanded with 800 to flat it out 2 uberlight coats then laquer then compound then polish

You can see the orange peel slightly but not in natural light only when your upclose with a torch. I saw a 10 plate beamer with more peel in it than my bumper which made me laugh

do you polish by hand? ive got orange peel out with a DA before. I sprayed a bumper on my first car and couldnt for the life of me get any true shine out of it. Was really flat and wet sanding and polishing didnt improve it, never attempted since!

Was gunna say i bet you spent alot on paint!
Title: Re: DIY U.S Rubstrip 100% finished
Post by: AD1.8T on 17 March 2012, 18:39
Yeah mate all by hand no cheating here lol hhow long did you leave after laquer and how much did you put on ? Not enough youl go through it and it wont shine !

Ive brought (roughly)

1 small can of plastic primer
1 small filler
1 big normal primer
5/6 small cans of reflex
1 small pug graphite grey
1 small rover gunmetal
1 small matt black
3 big laquer

Plus
2 tubes bumper filler
2 tubes of jb weld
Sand paper

Small cans - 6.50
Big cans - 7.50
Filler - 6
Jb weld - 6.50
Sand paper - 5 ????

Anyone dare add that all up lol ?

Spraying metallic paint out of a can is a nightmare! It's so hard to make sure it isnt patchy and silver is probably the worst. Top job mate!

Thats cheating lol na i asked a couple of body shops round here if they could do the rubstrip 1 said yeah and he would of plastic welded it for 150 2 said they wouldnt do it and 1 anothers method was to chuck a load of filler/fiberglass in there lol

And atleast this threads here for people when they search (yeah right) how to do it cause when i was looking i didnt find a great deal of info on it

Nothing beats a good old bit of DIY mate! :afro: I tried spraying a few bits, but just couldn't quite master the right technique for the lacquer! :undecided: I know you're meant to slowly build up layers of it, but I could never seem to get it 'even' or when I did, it was a little too much n ran the risk of sagging! Lastly, the colour that Halfrauds made up for me, is slightly darker than the paintwork!

You have done an awesome job on that bumper, n I would be chuffed knowing it came from a rattle can!

Yeah it is s slightly darker finish but the rear bumpers the same. I done loads of light coats of laquer and when it was dry it was as rough as arseholes after using the rubbing compound on it it goes super smooth !

Wait for it ....... Halfords own !  na its pretty good stuff useless on the standard paint though but for rattle cans where the paints quite soft it does the trick

I think it was rough cause of the over spray as i was doing it in a shed whenever ive done mirrors or spoilers ect it always come out smooth

Post by: AD1.8T on 18 March 2012, 16:56
What number plate    na im gunna keep it undernieth the passenger seat with sticky pads on the back so when i eventually get pulled il say it fell off lol if they kick up enough fuss il get a sticker type numberplate and put it top of the windscreen pass side

I havnt been actually pulled yet for no numberplate only time was the were doing a stop and check basically at the end of my road and even then he didnt say anything until i asked if there ampr cameras can see through glass which they can so i said my numberplates fine on the dash then ...... He said (in a polite way) "if you get pulled over by someone in a s hit mood theyl fine me but in general its not a problem"
