Internet is fine posting this via my ipad but you can't get Word there is a similar program i think can't remember what is called though
Edit: called Pages

you still need a computer even if you own an ipad. ipad is simply a device to consume media and not a replacement for a computer.

Technically you don't need a computer once it's up & running but yes it better to have one if you want to chop & change what you have stored on your iPad

I would still have access to a computer as there are a few in my household and I would store all my data on one of them anyway, I just wouldn't have my own computer.

I have an ipad.. doesnt get used much, and when i does it usually for surfing and 'sh1t'. Not a replacement for a laptop really.

You can activate an iPad without a PC now
As said it's no replacement, it's a nice to have device though.

My wife has a ipad2 and i have a samsung galaxy tab 10.1,the samsung is better most apps are free on android where as on the ipad they try and charge you for pretty much everything. The samsung is also more user friendly when web browsing because you can use flash player (apple refuse this). Dont buy into the apple hype.

Apple refuse because it's not the way forward
Don't be put off by the non flash as Adobe are no longer developing flash for mobile devices as apple predicted would happen & most websites have moved away from flash anyway as its outdated software.
In my view the majority of companies that develop & make good apps wont if they don't get paid so I don't mind paying for apps if they are good, everyone seems to want everything for nothing nowadays. Would you go to work everyday for nothing, No ? So why should they ?
Each to their own I love my iPad hardly use my computer nowadays

Asus EE transformer best of both worlds?

I had one of them and ended up selling it. Really sluggish performance.

I know there are two types early ones with some issues, but I thought the latest models had improved bios and sorted out the Wifi issues?

My sister got an ipad 2, she's now wanting to sell it and has already bought a laptop to replace the ipad, which she thought was a laptop replacement  My mother is also wanting a laptop again and doesn't use her tablet a lot any more  I did tell them it's not a replacement for laptops
Pages on the ipad is a mediocre word processor at best, and won't give you all the compatibility that MS Word would, typing on any touch screen is a pita for me as I touch type, not hen peck. Typing a lot would require a B/T keyboard imo, pretty much making having a touch screen device for word processing pointless, this is assuming the OP does a lot of word processing as it seems to be a concern for him.

Yea it depends what you want it for, I use my iPad all the time at home but not for work mainly use it for leisure. I hardly use my iMac nowadays but would not get rid as there are some things I still need it for. So I do agree i suppose it's not a complete replacement.

You can now get Word & Excel using an app called Cloud On
