I used to live near the Wey Navigation which regularly flooded during prolonged periods of rain.

British Waterways have a duty to manage water levels in all CANALS so that they do not flood.

Len.. is this some kind of wind up?
-
Wind up? why?
I opened the link and saw a house with a set of lock gates next to it!
So I assumed (wrongly in this case) that it was a canal.

Thats like saying the police have a duty to stop crime so there isnt any

Yes but you can sue British Waterways!

Yes but you can sue British Waterways!
Feel free to.... does it make any difference to your original statement that canals dont flood?
-
The river Thames often floods - ask The Boat House in ye olde Wallingford  They usually have to close off their lower deck area once a year when the river swells and the park/pools at the river side have been flooded before
Hope you get a good price on insurance if you go for it, chuff :lipsrsealed:
-
We have a current drought in the SE

I think there is a difference between 'don't' and 'managed in a way that they shouldn't' flood.

I agree. Just Len and his statement of fact I was aiming to highlight... no one is going to sue anyone just becasue their local canal is flooded

I was agreeing with you and perhaps pointing out the fact that the latter terminology might have been a better choice of words for Len.

Forget all this flooding business £1000 to rent!!! You can pay a mortgage off at less than that with current interest rates!!
-
The basic design of a canal means that they cannot flood.
If however they are not managed properly that is a different story.
In normal use a canal will not flood because the flow through the locks will prevent that.
There is however a dead or slack season for canals when traffic is restricted mainly because major maintenance work is carried out.
During that period, usually the winter, British Waterways have a duty to keep the water levels to as near as possible to normal.

The basic design of a canal means that they cannot flood....
which we know is not true... so a flawed design?? or flawed statement?

Well more fools you lot then
And my point still is why would you pay that a month for a roof over ya head that will never belong to you? Dead wasted money unless short term ie under 12 months
-
Renting has it plus side I never have to pay to fix anything & I live in a house in a very nice area that would cost me about £300k to buy. I never bothered buying as I have moved around a lot been here nearly 2 years now quite long for me lol
I just never got around to buying rented for over 15 years now

Most mortgages are paid off in 20
