Hey guys. New member here and due to upgrade my Fiesta ST in May/June time. Ive gone through a monster list of what I want and after some serious soul searching and may wife and father telling me I need a more grown up car, not the 2 seaters ive been looking at, i've narrowed down my search. Budget under £10k.
Im going to test the 130 M sport because its a hell of a car for the money and id be stupid not to although im not sold on the looks.
and the mk5 GTI of course. I love the looks of the things. Subtle, classy but aggressive. Only problem with it is its kinda slow in comparison to most other hot hatches. With this in mind if I did get a GTI it would be straight to REVO or Jabba for a stage 1.
Ok enough of my boring back story. What I want to know is just how quick is the GTI with a stage 1. The 130 is 0-62 in 6.1 seconds with bags of torque and a nice high limiter. For arguements sake the Focus ST is 6.4 seconds.
How does a generic stage 1 compare. Im 27 and in a good job so im not a traffic GP yobbo but I have a few mates with quick cars and dont want to be embarressed and be the one they are all waiting for. Of course my mate has a 2.2 vx220 so im always going to be holding him up.
Sorry if this has all been covered before and I appreciate any advice.

0-60mph on the Fiesta ST is 7.9 secs.
0-60mph on the Golf Gti is 7.2 secs

Thanks for the helpful post...........

What's your budget? You got enough to stretch to an Edition 30?
If not, a remapped GTI is a night and day difference to how it drives; I've remapped a few now and they never fail to bring a smile to the customers face
Whilst it won't have the outright power of its rivals, its the fact the GTI can use all of its power without trying to spit you off the road
-
£10k budget so looking at a £9k car plus a stage 1 and a forge dv. Should get me a nice 40,000 mile 2006 car.
With a remap the car should be putting out 240-250 bhp right? With that in mind I was expecting it to be quicker than its standard rivals and be on a relatively equal footing with the 130 or am i expecting too much?
I get the feeling im trying to talk myself out of the 130 and into the GTI but just dont want to spend £10k and be a little diappointed thats all.................

A good strong remap will be about the 240bhp mark but like I said, the GTI will be able to USE that power and that for me is the key difference
You won't be disappointed
-
Let me say this at the outset - don't buy a car because you want the fastest!
Yes a mapped Mk5 GTI is quicker than a standard Focus ST, and to be honest even though the 130 has a bit more grunt, I reckon a mapped Mk5 would be quicker due to the extra torque. But then an ST can also be mapped (a 130i won't really see much as it's naturally aspirated). So if you want the quicker car...
...but Rhyso has also made a very good point. The GTI, although underpowered on paper, is actually a very good drive. It's pretty well balanced and the power is both strong and consistent. The engine does not have an obvious flat spot and in the standard GTI there is minimal turbo lag. It's definitely not the quickest horse in the stable, but the GTI is one of the best drives. There are cars with more power as you have mentioned but few of them will feel as sweet on a good road.
It's also one of the best looking IMO (subjective of course) managing a perfect blend of subtlety, sportiness and class.
Judging from your current car, I don't think what we're saying is entirely alien to you. The Fiesta ST is hardly it's own class leader in terms of power. The Corsa VXR for example has 190bhp and yet I'd imagine a well driven ST 150 could comfortably hang on it's tail down a good road. The reason being that the ST is a pretty balanced package with enough power to be quick but without corrupting either the grip or balance.
But, if power is the ultimate goal you are after, get an Edition 30. Map that and you'll be in RS levels of power.
And let me add in, just a closing thought, the Leon Cupra. It shares much of the GTI's mechanical underpinnings but offers a good bit more power standard (as well as excellent mapping potential) whilst remaining much better looking and more grown up than the ST (although the 130i beats it in maturity).
Verdict:
1. GTI / Cupra
2. ST
3. 130i

5th gear R32 v 130 video. Bear in mind a mapped GTI is faster than an R32.

Megane R26, not the most solid built but very quick and beats most hot hatches round the track, remap and its well up there with more powerful motors.
My vote is Seat Cupra R...

I need a more grown up car
"Grown up" is not what springs to mind when I think of the R26. Capable track car yes, but grown up no.
The Seat Cupra R would be the older shape. For his money I reckon the newer Seat Cupra would be within reach, and the newer Cupra is quicker than the older Cupra R.

I dont want just the quickest car as you can see from my past buy. I want a good all rounder that will also be able to upset some of its rivals in stand guise. If i got a 130 I wouldnt bother with the remap. The idea with the GTI is you kind of have to remap it to release its potential. I was hoping that a stage 1 will be a comparable car to the 130.
Ive taken a long time to narrow my list and accept that a 'grown up' car might be the way to go. I will be running it for 4/5 years so wanted something that will be classless and give me no problems.
Ive looked at the Cupra but just down find it as attractive as the GTI. Plus I love the GTI dash. I take it a stage1 GTI will be on the same level as the Cupra due to similar power levels. I know it must look like im only interested in getting the 'fastest' car but im not. I just wanted to make sure the GTI 'weakpoint' could be overcome and turn it into a class leader in all areas.
-
In answer to your above question, a stage 1 GTI will beat the 130i.
The video's Hurdy posted show two comparisons between the Golf R32 and the BMW 130i. In both the R32 is quicker. A remapped GTI is quicker than an R32. Therefore a remapped GTI is quicker than a 130i.

I think you've already made your mind up.
And then remap it.
-
If you want a 'grown up car' the buy a Mk5 or an A3 or a BMW 1.
Why worry about 0-60 times? how many 'grown up' people reguarly do pointless 0-60 mph drag races from traffic lights? :undecided:
A Mk5 GTI would be a very nice car to live with on a day to day basis. If you want a fast car, by a Caterham or an Mitsubishi EVO Turbo nutter or something.

I think I need to clarify 'grown up'. I want something classless and that wont age. Something that is respectable and doesnt look like a kid and halfords build it. Although im being egged towards that I still want something with a little devil lurking underneath for when im on my own and the big kid surfaces. Surely that makes sense Organisys?

To quote a certain Mr Clarkson
'The GTI is all things to all men'
Think he also said something along the lines it will waft along on the school run to drop the kids off and then you can drive it back home like you've been stung like a bee
You get the idea though

GTI would definitely be the best of the three once it's had a re-map. VW seem to sell all their cars in "boring" setting, with you needing to get it mapped to tap into it's real power. If I were you I'd get a better exhaust as well. Not only is it going to improve performance, it'll sound veeeery nice as well.
-
Might be pushing my budget a little to get a map, dv and an exhaust plus a nice example. Perhaps the exhaust for xmas or something......
-
I wouldnt buy anything that 'needed' a remap. Get a car thats good for you out the box. Remapping a car just shows it isnt very good out the box. The whole 'a remapped GTI is better than an R32' argument for example. The R32 is quick enough out the box, if the GTI has to be remapped to be as quick then its the lesser car - end. Same applies to anything that needs modding.
Its nice to know you can remap something down the line if you become bored. But buy a car which you like out the box. What happens when you become bored in a years time, as you are already running a modded car.

Still looking at the moment but like the look of this. Seems to be an awful lot of car for the cash but can anyone tell me what wheels these are?!?!?!?

Am after what wheels they are really. Are they aftermarket or an option as standard? Never seen them before. All the GTI's ive seen (and thats really not many tbh) have the big telephone dial alloys.
-
they look like audi wheels to me
-
I'd say reps as the look like Audi S Line wheels to me

they look rather sh*t on that tbh

Agreed!
-
Apart from the low milage it's not really a lot of car for the money.

if you ask me mate, id be looking at focus st, or mk5 gti, for one im a massive ford fan and you cant beat the sound of the 2.5 5 pot, a st is what? 225 bhp if you map it your gonna have say 40 bhp extra and it will be cheaper and shouldnt miss a beat, mk5 gti well lovely car some come with great spec, just the power is a little lower and wont have the same sound as the st upto you at the end of the day

Mine was pretty quick with a stage 1 remap and intake. It ran 14.1 - 1/4 mile et's @ 99 mph. That was running 92 octane in the US. With higher octane stage 1 would likely run 13.8 et's, but these are a bit slow off the line = 2.2 sec 60ft et's are about average so you will likely keep up with low to mid 13et cars from a roll as they usually have 1.6 sec 60ft et's. And even better if you go stage 2 w/downpipe and intake.
^Above is best case scenario^
BTW - mine was never 7 sec + 0 to 60mph ;[ Always closer to 6 sec. flat @ stage 1
But possible because as I said the challenge is to hook up off the line from a dig ;}
-
Well my wife is encouraging me to get sometihng 'special' and is trying to put me in a monaro
-
Have you bought anything yet fella?
If not, why don't you spoil yourself with 05/06 plate Gti, 60k miles. Should be around £7k.
You could then spend the remaining £3k of your budget on a whole host of mods, such as I did. The end result, an extra seventy bhp give or take a couple of ponies.
You seem keen on bringing down the 0-60 time and increasing top end and I can tell you it is possible with investment of around £3k to bring the 0-60 time down to around 5.5 seconds and raise your top end to 160 mph+
130M's, Cupra R's, R32's, they'll all be trailing in your wake mate and it's unquestionably proper good fun!

Test drive before you buy. The electric steering on Mk5 gti's is non-linear and quite poor. I got fed up with it and sold my car.

I traded in my VW for another VW....

Oh buttwash you are a legend....
I'm impressed with the GTI on snow.
For a fat tyred car with no LSD the electronics make it very easy to drive.
The DSG works a treat on the snow.
It really is a great allrounder.
You will regret it for ever if you sell and buy a lesser car.
The Mk5 GTI DSG is just about the best car in the world.
Keep it as long as you can. That way you laugh in the face of depreciation and have one of the few classless cars, respected by all.

My current VW has the good old cam belt 2.0 Turbo, not the horrible new cam chain engine fitted to the mk6
