i've just found some history for the engine in my car, cam belt was done 5 years and 10,000 miles ago, how often should they be changed?
-
not sure for a mk2 but mk3 is 60k. I don't know if times really a factor but 10k in 5yrs sounds like it may have been stod for a while. Might be worth doing anyway for peice of mind. I always do them on a new car no matter what.
-
Off the top of my head I thought it was 70000 miles but as already said, I always do it straight away (along with the tensioner) as soon as I get a car that is new to me.........especially if there is no service history.
Actually I don't think I have any official information on when to change oil, oil/filter and cambelt for mk1's and mk2's. Does anyone have the info to hand? What do VW recommend?
-
VW recommend check and adjust every 20k mls and replace as necessary (what ever that means?). I would fit a new belt and tensioner as rich and monkeyalan have said .
Steve.

i would change it between 60 and 70
-
ok so how much roughly would a garage charge for this?
-
The cam belt and tenshiner kit is about 40 - 60 quid, then you have the labor! maybe 120 - 150 quid? not sure as i get me mate to fit mine for a few bevy's! joy!

i bought the cambelt, tensioner and water pump from AVS spares or try G star dubworld
parts and labour cost me 70 quid in total. Dont like doing cambelts on my own engine :undecided:
