Title: 16v low on power/feels flat , _ few other problems
Post by: jims13 on 22 May 2005, 00:15

hi all, picked up my 16v golf 2 days ago, after replacing the loose gearbox and starter motor bolts, giving it a good clean and polish , its mostly all good. i have a few probs though.

1. the car feels quite flat, even on full throttle, top compare this, i took mine out and my mate is 8v , and tbh he had me until he ran out of gears.!!!  didi think this would be the case.

2. raditor fan rubs ocassionly on shroud. has anyone else had this happen, i was just gonna trim the blades back abit, as i ssume that the berings on the fan are kanckered and causing it to move.

3. exhaust is holed in few places, and i need a good replacment. in years gone by with my old vw's i would have gone for supersprint and remus. any recommendations or anyone selling a secondhand system/bakbox

thats all that i can find with it , so im quite happy overall . i even got 32.6 mpg on a run to heathrow this morning, it was dead on 200 miles round trip (spooky) , i take it thats about right???

incase you wondered ive had loads of vw;s b4, mainly rocco's , the last one being and tsr 1900 lump with pack c head ,tsr 203 cam etc........ so im no stranger to these, but it has to be said im a bit out of touch. and i havent had a 16v b4, but i have just come form a nissan 200sx that had 280 bhp , so i no it aint gonna be in the same kettle of fish. but its still never the less and damm good car, and i do wonder why i ever deviated.

Have you given it a service recently? Its amazing how clean oil and a fresh air filter help things along. It should not feel flat when you drive. There should be noticeable improvement in engine response at just over 4000 rpm. Does your car red line alright, or not reach it? If you dont know when the last service was just get everything done like plugs, oil filters etc. It could really be somethig as simple as a very oily air filter which is restricting alot of air. Dont forget the breather hose goes straight into the airbox! Mine was almost 1/3 covered in black oil (last owner serviced nearly 10000 before i did it when i bought it)

That MPG seems fine. I get 30-35 on long trips if i do 70mph most of the way. Under 20 in town though  Damn lead foot of mine. No doubt dsomeone else will give you more specialised advice but the basics never hurt to try 1st. You cant have too many services.

hi, yeah its going to get a full service as soon as i get back from my honeymoon . it redlines ok , and u can feel it come on cam over 4000, but it aint a difinitive kick , its just a little bit more grunt, not at all what i expected.

im gonna do air filter, plugs , leads, oil filter, oil, fuel filter and i might do a pollen filter if i can be bothered, ill also do the anti freeze and if its a diy job the cam belt and water pump.

im also looking for some tunning advice with these, i take it they use a form of k-jet injection, in which case does the old school mk1 tunning work??? or can these be chipped? i was thinking chip, air filter , exhaust, and maybe some other little bits, its already lowered so that taken care of.

Go for a k&n Panel filter mate, and remove all the restricting junk from the lower part of the air box. Works a treat.

i take it you've had it setup (idle, timing & CO%) correctly?

have a look n see what gearbox code is stamped on the bottom of the bell housing

alot of 16v's dont have their original 2Y gearboxes and can be found with all sorts of gearboxes from other petrol/diesel golfs or even masetro's!! alot of which aint close ratio boxes so performance suffers

the only other thing you can do is stick it on a rolling road and see what power its putting out - that'll give you a good indication on just how strong it is

cheers gambit, im was gonna have a look at the box once i found out what code it should have had. so thx for the info. its not guttless, but it takes ages to develop any power, im gonna check the timing and c/o tonight, and have a look at the box as soon as i can work out how to get the trolley jack under the car (its to damm low)

does anyone know what the timing should be at, or shall i just adjust it till it pinks then knock it back a touch.

cheers jim

just match up the marks on the flywheel using a timing light, and make sure the ISV is disconnected when your doing this.

also, make sure the car is up to operating temp, and also running on Super Unleaded/Optimax

I'd just get a new rad fan & shroud, the good news is the 16v rad is exactly the same size as those found on 1.6 Carbed models. (Driver, CL) Handy because you're much more likely to find a 1.6 Carbed MK2 in a scrappy than a 16v :)

Saying that I have my old mk2 Driver fan & shroud in me garage which you can have for free if you can pick it up from Bracknell
