Title: rear brake caliper..driving me mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: Diluxe on 21 May 2005, 21:52
Hi guys, hand brake stopped working on the left rear brake caliper spent an hour or so taking the cable of the car to replace it with a new one.

realised when i got it off that the cable wasnt snapped

had a further look around tha caliper and the mechanism that the cable attaches to on the caliper seems to have seized  and now no longer rotates.

the link on bentley is as below, its fig`7-9

http://volkswagen.msk.ru/vw_doc/eva2/SU02/ch7.2.1.html

any idea guys what gone on wrong and can it be fixed?

i  dont really want to spend 50 notes  on caliper if it can be refurbed somehow.

cheers in advance

I took mine off and left them in a bucket of diesel overnight, freed them up a treat. Although saying that they did seize on me when i was driving and caused the car to flip.

So i guess it depends on whether you want to risk it or not.

I had seized rear callipers repeatedly over the years, they would last about a couple of years and cost a fortune. Then I someone suggested I used mk3 callipers which were a lot cheaper, I had them fitted 4/5 years ago and have never had a problem since.
