Title: mpg from a 150
Post by: Anthony on 13 February 2012, 22:42
Hi i get between 400\450 miles from a tank and drive fairly steady with the odd heavy right foot !is this normal mpg , i would be intrested in what other cars are getting ? its done 131k and had full vw history till 100k, i servive it myself with all genuine parts, it had the camand follwers done around 10k ago with belt ect . ive heard storys of cleaning egr valve and manifold helping with mpg ? any tips appreciated ! Its a 2003 gti 150 6 speed
Thanks in advance

I'm seeing between 500-560 a tank, and getting 50-53mpg on a good motorway run, normally about 48-50 on a shorter journey. I cleaned out my manifold and wow...what a difference. Defo added some MPG and the car drove sooo much better. Clean it out!!

How difficult is the intake manifold to remove? And will it need new gasket?

normal town driving I tend to see 38-45 and on a motorway run I'll get 50 or so. I've cleaned out my EGR but I've not done the rest of the manifold yet.

An hour if your competent I guess...A new gasket wouldn't always be necessary, depends on condition of old one I guess, but for a few quid I'd get one from the dealer

Defo put this on your list of things to do...

biggest improvent i saw was changing exhaust

i'm getting 48mpg on the commute and saw 53 on a run to midlands

That was normal driving too - wasn't trying to get big numbers

550+ miles to a tank, about 75% motorway, long term average of 49.8mpg

wow the very best ive ever had was 480 driving down to newquay, think its time to whip the manifold off and have a look,  i would have thought the mechanic that did the new cam would have cleaned it when  doing the job but i will have to wait and see . we have a snap on diagnostic computer at work so maybe worth pluging that in as well as the codes were cleared 10k ish ago when the cam was sorted, so would be intresting to see if its thrown anything else up

Id already done 60 miles when this photo was taken.

Average at that time was 59.2 mpg sat at 70mph on the motorway with the cruise control activated

i can only dream of mileage like that, do you actually get that from the tank or is the computer a bit optimistic ?  I'm going to gine the inlet manifold a clean first thing in the morning , i went over to hull from manchster today and the average mpg on the trip thingy said around 40 on the way there and 35 on the way back, but ive always taken that with a pinch of salt ! the actual one can say 112mpg one min and 36 on the same stretch of road. My 2003 1.9 gti doesnt have the fuel countdown on the dash unfortunatly. but fingers crossed its gunked up tomorrow so i see a reasonable improvment. i hope it goes well as ive got to pick some standard 16" alloys up from huddersfield. my 18s with rubber band tyres are just to harsh a ride on the roads where i live

You got the computer on the real time setting put it to the trip setting. I found its accurate to within 3-4% from when Ive worked it out in the past.
Ive had over 650 miles from a tank and filled up before the light came on so another 55 miles till empty. Minimum I get is 550 and thats 80 ish on the motorway

Had an Rtech remap last week, on a 180mile 60% motorway run yesterday I got 57.1 MPG...very pleased with this. Just filled up with 75£ worth of V power...going to see what I get out of a tank of 'mixed' driving

I've never fitted more than £65 in mine but I have never run it to the fuel light coming on

That's some pretty good figures, just out of interest is your car mapped?

pretty good its amazing lol ive just done the egr and inlet + oil n filter. and fitted a new gen maf, and still only manage 35mpg round town and 44.1 was my best on the motorway for 2 hours yesterday at 70/80 !

Yes its mapped. If I didn't get 50+ on the motorway Id be looking for why?

I'm on a mission at the moment to find out why its not that good, i only use shell fuel and filled up with v power yesterday to see if thats any better, am on with cruise control to see if that helps , run injector cleaner through. The injectors were sent off to be checked at a specialist when the cam was replaced 18 months ago and were fine . And ive got the innotek turbo cleaner to do in the next couple of weeks . so I'm fast running out of ideas lol . also no faults stored on the ecu either, and i'm trying to drive like a grandma

Ouch thats not right! 35 around town (depending on driving style obviously  ) is about right but 44 on the motorway!!! I get around 52 on the way to work at 70/80 as get stuck in traffic and usually around 60 on the way home although I usually keep it below 60mph for the return.
Have you checked for a boost leak? May also be worth plugging it in and checking the N75 valve.

all the pipe work looks to be ok and i replaced the lower ones both sides as there was a very minor oil leak from one side. Ive had it plugged in today at work and apart from the airbag light being on from me fitting cruise control on sat all was in order. would a faulty n75 show as a fault ?
Title: Re: mpg from a 150
Post by: Defender on 12 March 2012, 21:40
Yes it would flag up a fault....very strange indeed!

Hope you cure the problem I will be interested to know what it is.

N75 doesn't necessarily  show up as a fault but would give ou boost problems/overboost rather than mpg problems.
Have you ever logged the maf?
Title: Re: mpg from a 150
Post by: Anthony on 12 March 2012, 22:24
what would i see from boost problems ?  if i go uphill in say 3rd or 4th steadily   it coughs a bit as as the turbo comes in at about 2 k ish but its fine if i gun it . as for logging the maf i dont even know what you mean  I know ive made comments like useing the diagnostic machine at work , but i'm only a painter lol

I did clear this fault on sat,17667 p1259 engine coolant system valve short to ground , cant seem to find what its from tho.
I'm sure ive read somwhere that the coolant temperature can cause problems , if its on the way out.
