My bonnets needing a re-Spray... Funds are very limited and have been quoted £300 to paint it and to dust in the front wings...
I simply cant afford that price at the moment.... So was thinking of doing my own bonnet... But i know how hard it is to paint bonnets and get them to look reasonably good.
Soooo... Was thinking of going down the route of Matt black. As im confidant enough to do that myself. But very unsure on how it will look....
Whats everyones opinion on it? Also anyone got pics of bonnets painted Matt black/Black on their Mk3's? cheers

Mine needs a respray too, as well as the grill and lights. I was thinking of doing my bonnet matte black too, or maybe satin black, not sure. Info would also help me out
-
Rattle can of mat black will be easiest, just try and get an even coat and it should look quite good
-
Unless is going rusty id wait until you can get a proper job done. If you do it Matt black then unless you remove all the Matt black it will be more difficult to colour match at a later date. The top colour is influenced by the colour underneath.
-
Rusty and stonechipped to feck...
Been told to re-spray it its gonna need to go back to bare metal anyway
-
It wouldn't take long to DA the mat black paint off when they come round to paint it properly
-
Matt black will look sh!t! And I will guaranty you will see the lines from spraying with rattle cans.
Mk3 bonnets are cheap! Just buy one from eBay or something that is same colour.
If I saw it with a matt black bonnet I would think, what a tool! He's ruined the look of the mk3 and it now looks like a chav car.

Thing is, an ebay bonnet will most likely be just as chipped/scratched, so no point!

As Khare said, most bonnets are just as bad second hand... And cant seem to even find one in my colour anyway
Scrappy/ebay bonnets will require same amount of painting as the one is have as well....
I was worried it could possibly look chavy though... And for streaks, i wouldnt rattle can it. Have a compressor and a small touch up gun at work
Anyone got any pics of one done?

Matt or Satin chips and scratches real easy, shows up like a sore thumb too
-
Just put 5 coats of clear on it.

i think matte black looks terrible and tacky, and easily damaged too. not exactly fancy paint on your car is it? £300 seems a higher than average price.
obviously you need to find somewhere with a good reputation, but my mate had his bonnet done £200 and it was spot on. and that was on a pretty new bmw
-
Metalic i think... yeah £300 Is steep imo... and that was Trade price lol.....
-
Don't worry about what any one else thinks, it's your car and your budget......I'm building my mk3 on a shoe string with very little time to play so I have to put up with satin black or tatty looks panels whilst I save up for a paint job.
-
hell il sell you my bonnet for a tenner, dont think any chips or anything in that..... but its hot chilli red... would look good mind ;)
and 300 is stupid price! im getting a fulll blow over for that price!
-
Haha red bonnet
300 was trade too

Matt-back the f*cker.
Mate of mine had a Jetta that was completely done in matt black.
Used to wash it and then touch in where it had come off with a can he carried around with him.
It's not like you're going to ruin the look of the car - it's a Golf3.
-
Matte black can look grey under clear coat(gloss or matte), i've used satin black with good success. It cuts the glare down and is more durable then matte IMO.
-
Hi mate, just came across this on ebay, dunno if the guy still has the bonnet or if its the riight shade of grey but its worth a try... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Breaking-VW-Golf-2-0GTI-1995-Mk-3-Auction-wheel-nut-/150756770541?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2319cdc2ed

Ah thats great mate. Al give him a msg!
-
just buy a sheet of vinyl in the colour you want andn wrap it.
-
I got an almost mint bonnet just before selling mine for £20. If you've put up with it for a while, just keep visiting local scrap yards every now and again. Guarantee you will come across one before long in decent nick to just swap out. Fading wont be a problem as they're all around the same age. Its only lacquer peel and chips you really need to worry about. f**k spending that for a respray!

Yeah, good look with it. If you can't find a new bonnet you could always carbon wrap it, I reckon that would look quite good on your car
