Got on the A14 Tuesday night, happily takin it easy cos some T*at was sat in the outside lane! Finally
she, they pulled in so in dropped down into 5th, put my foot down and lost power at 4000rpm. The engine light flashed, followed by the EPC light coming on. I managed to coast into the next service stage.
I called out the RAC and they could see mulitple mis-fires on all cylinders. The exhaust stunk of petrol (not oil), the RAC guy thought is was flooding/over fuelling. So I ended up getting a lift home on the back of a recovery wagon
Took it in to the dealer, no courtesy car! However 1 day later and I have my 2nd new inlet manifold, something replaced on the turbo and a new injector to cyliner 3! Happily this is covered by the warranty
My GTI is now running VERY smooth! It seems quicker which is nice! However it also seems to be guzzling gas?? I am now left pondering if my GTI has ever ran properly since it got knicked or is there something a miss with the fuel mix? VW suggest filling up and recording how many miles I get to the tank? Not sure what this will prove, as the mpg depends on how you drive but will give it a go.
I know that my optimum mpg was driving at 3000rpm or just under. So I'll let you know what I get.
-
It's probably using more fuel because you're driving it quicker because it's smoother and nicer to drive. See how things settle down over a period of time.
The GTI should do around 320 miles to a tank driven normally-ish, more if you're scared of touching the right hand pedal.
3000 rpm is a good engine speed for economy as it's around the peak torque figure and in the engine sweet spot.

I get about 320-335 Miles to a tank of fuel yet I calculate an average of 24-25MPG I am K04 and heavily modified. Is this what you are suggesting is normal for a stock GTI?

You don't have any hills where you're based do you Krazy? Hills affect economy big time.
Lets say 320 miles is a reasonable minimum tankful going from full to when the light comes on for non scientific purposes in mixed driving including hills, cities, motorway etc.

But if you have to go up a hill presumably you have to come back down it [whether it's the same hill or not] so that should even out the consumption

You'd think that wouldn't you, but it doesn't seem to work that way. If I head west from my home which is where the M5 ends in Devon I go across a couple of moors and lots of bendy A roads and eventually end up at Lands End. Average consumption is around 31-32mpg on this run, driving sensibly. If I head North and East towards the Midlands I get around 31-32 until I get past Bristol where it flattens out and then consumption settles around 34-35 mpg right up through the Midlands.
Figures taken from journey average on the computer thingy.

Just done 95 miles up to Lincolnshire & got av 32 mph, and that was with the "odd" hard aceleration here & there! Just seems to be using more on the initial short runs to work & back. The power delivery is definitely much better.
-
Warm up cycle in cold weather uses a lot of fuel. The engine goes into choke mode plus you've got lots of electrical ancillaries running which consume power and thus more fuel. Bad time of year for fuel use be it your car or house.
My Ibiza GTI which is used as my daily commuter and shopping car has a 2.0 petrol engine that does around 35mpg on a run but is using about 45 litres of fuel to do 200 miles around town on a cold engine at the moment. I only use the Golf for long distance work so can't compare directly.
-
Went up to Leicester yesterday & guess what, the engine management light came on again!! Took it into the dealer today & the found a cracked sensor cover causing a short to the engine! All replaced (and car washed) so let's see how long it goes now! Good news is the fuel consumption seems to be back nearer to normal!
-
I don't find hills too bad to be honest, because what you lose climbing you can usually recoup on the way back down.
Sorry to hear that your car still isn't 100%.

Back to the dealers again for me tomorrow  got on the A1 tonight & the clutch dipped followed by loss of power. No engine management lights this time so I'm guessing this is something to do with the turbo or the air intake?? Any ideas? It's like driving a 2 litre car with no umph and the air intake sounds bad
-
Sounds like it may have just blown the pipe off the turbo. Not sure how the mk6 one is setup off hand but I use to get this happen every so often with our cupraR
Unless its dome somthkng nasty

+1 ^
Happened on my Bora, intercooler/turbo pipe popped off with almost complete loss of power (and a small plume of black smoke from exhaust!). Just need to find which pipe it is and re-connect, good to go

Dealer says when injector 3 went they should have replaced them all at the sane time & they didn't. So I'm in a TDI for the weekend.
-
Bloomin 'eck, not having much luck with this car eh?!
Let's hope that *this* time.......

That is really, really awful.
A diesel for a whole weekend......

Nice One

Well the dealer reports 1 x charcoal canister faulting and found to be jamming the EGR valve. All now replaced under warranty and black is back again!! Apparently all the faults are completely un-related so fingers crossed thats it now
-
Well it's been a while but sadly it's back! The engine management light that is, accompanied by loss of power! Limped the car home, turned the ignition off, turned the engine over again and no light?
Back to the dealers again tomorrow, I'm guessing it's going to be another inlet manifold for me then (that'll be the 3rd one, possibly 4th)

OMG, hope it gets sorted properly
-
Apparently it's an intermittent fault and they suggest replacing the high pressure pump with reg valve! As the lights gone off now, I thought I'd see how it goes. Still feels very lumpy around 3k rpm, under or over and it's fine
-
I would have taken a match to it by now, you seem to have been very unfortunate.

Have thought about it once or twice!
Took her to the local tyre company this week as she's also suffering from a whirring noise from the wheels. Two new back tyres later and were are all sorted (tyres were apparently "out of shape").
Asked them to look at the running issue and rather than changing the high pressure pump, they changed the fuel filter! All now good on this front as well and a snip at £30! Up yours Vindis!

The tyres are probably due to whats called sawtooth and makes the tyre look like a 50p coin. It often happens on modern hothatches with large tyres. Happened to mine. Its also known theres a huge tolerance on the rear suspension settings fromthe factory. A full setup at a motorsport place coats about £110 and should reduce the risk of it happening again. I will get mine done once these tyres ware out.

Mmmm, very interesting snoops. Wish I'd reported this earlier, the rears still had plenty of tread left on them!

Have a read of that threads attachment.
I plan on a full geometry check when I replace the tyres as Iirc Ken (Mkviken) GTI was not very well setup from the factory and he recommended I got mine checked when I comented mine was far noisier than his was.
-
This website may also be useful for locating places that use Hunter 4 wheel alignment system I had full geometry check last year after a winter on potholed roads and though it wasn't massively out, you could feel the difference. Tyres are wearing evenly.

The wife's BMW 123d convertible suffered from uneven tyre wear and a sort of catching noise from the rear wheels. They recommended one of these Hunter wheel alignment thingys. That runs on 245/35 run flats at £200 a pop so proper wear is important. The stealer reckoned the alignment would also cure the catching noise so will probably get it done when the spanner finally flashes at me to take it for a service.
Never come across it on any of my GTis though.
