Wandering if anyone can shed some light on this one. My car has been in the garage since Wednesday for a new clutch. I ordered one from Euro Car Parts and took it to my garage to fit. He is now telling me this is the wrong clutch and the gearbox on my 8v is actually off a diesel !!!!! Could this be possible and what effect would it have on the car ?? I have had 6 Mark 3's in my time and apart from the VR this is by far the quickest which may be helped by the twin cold air feeds and cone filter and the fuel regulator switch. Would the diesel gearbox help at all ??

Chances are someone buggered a gearbox somewhere along the line and either couldn't find the correct coded gearbox or dropped on the dizzler 'box cheaply. Would have thought a dizzler box would have longer ratios?
-
I may be wrong but I thought all 020 clutches were the same on 8v's regardless of gearbox? some people like fitting diesel box's as they are stringer have have 'better' ratios, but I wouldn't of thought they would need a different clutch. I'm sure someone will come along and proove me wrong shortly though :P

All mk3 020 boxes have the same clutch and flywheel...... I think
The ratio's are different tho but this wouldn't affect the clutch anyhow. The really early mk2 020's had smaller input shafts which would affect the clutch, the clutch and gearbox would fit back to the block but the clutch would be useless :undecided:

I did think the 16v was different but all the rest are the same :undecided:

16v is 02a brother

Apparantly the clutch the garage needed had to be measured specially and the chap reckoned Euro Car Parts would not be able to supply this one and he uses them so probably tried them first. Got one delivered late yesterday afyernoon so I should hopefully get my car back Monday. Been without it since Wednesday and it feels lile a partbof me is gone !!!!!!
-
See if you can get the guy in the garage to give you the code off the gearbox (stamped in the bellhousing), that will tell you more.
-
Well I now have my car back and an empty wallet !!!! Turns out my gearbox is off a 1989 1.8 Golf and when he checked he reckoned it is factory standard. At least the car is back and drives well again.

So how much did it cost for a mk2 gti clutch?

I took it in on Wednesday with a 2ltr GTI clutch which he fitted then removed, he then ordered the clutch I needed and fitted this. Then he replaced the inner boot on the drive shaft which had split and I got the car back this afternoon alongwith a bill for 250 smackers.

I'm in the wrong game

Anyone know if a 1.6 gearbox will fit a 2.0 8v AGG?
Cheers

Fitted a KR box from a Mk2 on my last 8v, bolts up fine just uses a different size clutch and plate.
Gives you a bit more take off  and a slightly lower top end iirc.
-
so a mk2 kr box will fit a mk3 abf ? mines a 2.0 16v
-
abf standard is an 02a box which is hydraulic clutch and cable shifter. If going from and 02a to an 020 you will need to convert to a rod shifter and cable clutch, which is kind of going backwards

What he said, I had one lying around and its a simple bolt up job for an 8v
