i have a 91 8 valve with 100k on the clock. It has a tapping sound coming from the top of the enging, after replacing the tappets the sound still continues. I have a suspicion that it may be the camshaft due to a small scar which i noticed on one of the cams. Could this be the problem? Can anyone help? Cheers

Could be, did you fit vw tappets or pattern ones?
-
I'll have to check the manual but don't you have to 'prime' the tappets before fitting them. If I'm right, did you prime them?
-
fitted vw ones. They dont need primed.

There is no need to actually prime them , but it is essential to let the tappets settle(ie. drop down) for at least 30 mins when first fitted.

Leaking exhaust manifold to head gasket can sound like a tapping noise, just a thought ::). Steve.

Ah, thats probably what I'm thinking of.

My Company Vectra made a tapping noise last time I drove it, thats probably because I broke the engine.... Vauxhalls, there not made for ragging, only did 120,000miles in it, got it when it was on 4,300.... They'll never beat VW, ragged my MK1, 140,00 miles, still asking for more.....
