Title: Valve stem oil seals

Does anybody know if you can do the valve stem oil seals without taking off the head? Or does anybody know where i can get them done for a good price thanks

Its possible to do it with the head on, but difficult. You need a tool to stop the valves dropping.

Can be done with compressed air.

Get one of these

Screw it into your sparkplug hole on the pot your working on.Get the piston to tdc and apply 80-90psi of air.This will pressurize the cylinder and hold your valve in place.

Simples :smiley:

Don't the valves rest on the top of the pistons if they at TDC?

Yes but it is usually too far of a drop to be able to lift the valve up enough to get the collets on.

Its the 1.8 20vt think its an agu. Its smokes when fired up or if its been ticking over for a while clears after a short drive . It doesnt smoke on boost so dont think its the turbo.

Where can i get 1 of those air pipe tools from anybody know

I could do with it being done asap really

May sound silly but is the car overfilled with oil? Even a touch over can cause it to smoke as you described i did it few years back. Worth a check.  :smiley:

Ive never heard of any 1.8T needing it doing there are lots of them on here with 150k +  :undecided:

ill have to check the turbo. might just get a head set do the all the gaskets n seals etc a put a new camvelt on the old girl. It drives mint apart from the smoke
