Ive done a search and it's looking likely I need the top and wiper outside section of the 2 front window seals. They've shrunk and are letting water in. This is a gonna cost a few hundred quid. I've read about using brake fluid to soften them and try refitting them. Anyone tried this? Is it usually the top section that shrinks or wiper or both?

Do you mean the seal that seals the window to the door and stops the water going down which never work on the mark 2 golf hence why they always leak through the membranes?
If so i foubnd a great method of removing that seal and putting silicon sealant underneath then letting the sealant dry properly and ooze out slightly to create a seal. It is a little messy but it has prevented water getting down the window and a thin layer bonds to the glass therefore does not really come away when you wind the window down.
That´s the only thing that has worked for me. I couldnt even do the membranes properly without some water coming in no matter what i did.
