Basically I bought a mk2 oak green 16V gti about a week ago, only driven it to work once or twice and about 35 miles from the bloke I bought it off and now it wont start at all even with leads attached.
It doesnt make a tick over or turning sound just makes a single tone.....kinda like a buzzer sound.
Does anyone have any ideas what this could be, Im meant to be learning how to do all this, hence why I bought a runner.....now its not and im a little out of my depth!

I sounds as simple as a battery to me. The buzzing sound would be the fuel pump.
Are you using decent jump leads? Does the time clock reset to 0:00 when you try to start it?
-
Buzzing could be ISV. Get a known good battery to start off with as suggested.

Duff Starter motor??
-
Calm down Thomas. Could be something very simple, most likely the battery.
We'll sort it out.
If you don't have access to a good battery, have you tried bump starting it?
When you turn the key do you only get the buzz of the fuel pump priming and then a click?
Does the radio, wipers, lights all work at full power?
Do you have a Mulitmeter to test the battery. (2.99 in the Off Topic Section )
We need symptoms. Then it's a process of elimination.

Ill get some fault finding done tomora, there isnt a buzz of the fuel pump at all....it did do that but then went intermitant and then no more.
The buzz is coming from the starter motor I believe!
They were a generic bunch of leads attached to my mates diesel Audi....didnt want to use my car lol Im going to take the positive termial off and connect the jump lead to that and as normal to the neg to bypass the battery draining any power away.
The lights etc are working....well the lights are I didnt check the wipers.
I got advised by someone I work with to connect the neg jump lead to the earth and then with his car running touch the pos of the sterter motor to see if it spins up!!!

I may aswell start the bidding, £150

Epic fail???
Thats just the everyday pain of owning a mk2 lol
-
Sounds like a dud solenoid in the starter. Give it a whack!
-
I had the same on my 8v mk3.
Needed a new starter motor but when i attempted to start it all lights etc went dim. I used multimeter to check power was getting to appropraite points and i concluded a new starter motor.
It had already given tell tale signs. Slow to turn over etc.

Doesn't sound like anything terminal. I'd give the wack the starter with a hammer trick a try.

Ok bringing us all back on track slightly, I got the new battery fitted and it did turn over, gave the starter motor a tap and rocked the car whilst in gear to hopefully loosen it up or something and then when started it again I got the same electronic whir that I was hearing before!!!
So we can rule the battery out, where do I go from here!
I think it needs the fluids topping up....coolant mainly but the oil level though a little grotty looks ok
Also I still cant hear the pump starting up when I turn the ignition on.
