Title: Portable USB HDD to fit armrest advice required.
Post by: Mr_F on 06 February 2012, 17:23
Hi Guys,

I'm looking at doing an offsite / in-car backup of my CD collection and after the most suitable 500gb portable 2.5" HDD around to fit under the centre armrest.

-- What model do you have and how well does it fit?
-- Does it drop to the bottom of the void? WD Passports get wedged!
-- Does the USB connector get jammed or require bending to fit?

If you have a smaller HDD in a range that has a 500gb option I would be interested in it's physical features too!

Once I've got the information I'll go update the Car Audio section with some knowledge.

Kind regards,

Mr F

Sorry don't use USB, but you should have a cable to connect to USB (like you do for iPod connection) so no bending of USB etc

I use a western digital passport 500gb and it is slightly tight because of the rubber so what I did was put a loop of selotape up both sides vertically and create a folded tab of selotape to grip it and pull out. There is too much cable but it can be fed down the sides and the cable has a reasonable kink in the top but it works ok

Cheers Aj, I borrowed one of those and thought it was a bit tight, but that's certainly enough to put it back in the running!

Any more, come-on there's more than one person with a HDD...

Sorry don't use a HDD, but a 32G memory USB stick.
Couple of things I found, The head unit does not recognize M4a compression (well my 310 doesn't), it just came up as 'file error', so save your music as MP3 (or WAV perhaps?) and I also had to create a folder called 'music' on the stick and drop everything in there before it would work..... If I Just dropped everything in the root area then only the first alphabetical artist would be recognized

Don't think you can use WAVs. Which is a shame considering the storage options availible now.

Yeah, quite possible, but if the manual's checked I'm sure it gives you exactly what it'll read (mine's in the glovee and it's cold out there!)
