Title: Who's feeling smug then?
Post by: dom on 05 February 2012, 11:29
Anyone else with snow tyres? Put mine on at the start of December and up until now thought that they'd been a waste of money....they've come into their own these last 24 hours though :smug:

My car is parked up down a private lane which is on a bit of an incline, I watched a bloke trying to get his volvo out earlier which resulted in a lot of swearing and failure. Brushed the snow off mine, go in put the heaters on full and cruised past feeling very smug :smug:

No winter wheels on but still able to get up hills with common sense and not hit anything like some of the morons down the road, or better yet maintain 70mph easily on motorways without swerving and I'm just running mid performance summer tyres

I used the clio with winters on just the front (continental snowstorms). Managed about 60miles of suburban driving yesterday. Went past almost everything inc 4x4's parked up at the side of the road.

On the negative side i did experience 2 bouts of snap oversteer.  Which both resulted in 180 degrees spins ending up on the other side of the road.

Great for "turning around in a cul-de-sac though  :lipsrsealed:

Snow tyres are excellent and do help. Well happy with the Bridgestones on our one. Cheaper than fixing damaged suspension.

Same, my snow tyres cost marginally more than a single mid-range all seasons one would have been!

i had a spare set of alloys so stuck winter tyres on them which should last a good few years, only started to snow yesterday, was too hungover to get out of bed yesterday so the car didnt move, today ill proberbly have a lazy day, and i hope the snows gone by tomoro cause theres already majour road works on the A road i go down meaning that instead of half a hour trip to work its been about 50-60 mins, and with the snow i can easily see it being 1.5 -2 hours :(

Had to use my car a lot yesterday, using 6 year old tyres which are currently classed as "close to the legal limit".  Absolutely no issues at all, got around all day safely.  It mainly comes down to being able to drive I think.  It's obvious you can't brake anywhere near as well in snow, yet the number of dicks I saw keeping an Audi driver distance from the car in front, beggars belief!

smug for one day's use out of 365? its a sunday so its not even like you saved a day's wages

It's even worse than that, there are 366 days this year!

I drove yesterday and today, no problem even though snow was about 10" deep, I drive a rear wheel drive bmw 3 series compact, all tyres are low on tread and I haven't got stuck, my mate wasn't so lucky in his M5 though, he covered quarter of a mile got stuck diagonally across the road with one of the rear wheels in the gutter, he called me at work to come and push him out.

Then today took it to his yard and it took 40 minutes to get it about 300 feet, I got fed up shovelling snow from in front of the tyres using a dustbin so I drove round the block drove all the way up to his car and reversed back, not a problem for me, told him to follow my tracks, it still needed pushing to do that, so now he's left it there and I've got to take him to work at 03:00.

Loads of idiots getting stuck though, stopping in a deep bit of snow instead of stopping 10 foot further back where there is clear tarmac, then just putting their foot down when they get stuck, like that will solve the problem of not having any traction, and the amount of people who have just gone off the road is scary, they still try to drive like the road conditions are normal.

But by far the worst thing is how people have been parking, if you can call it parking that is, I call it skidding to a stop in a random place either half way up the path or closer to the centre of the road than the curb and abandoning the vehicle. I love how there is a bit of snow and peoples brains stop working and everyone panics.

So many BMW's stuck today on my drive to the airport to pick my parents up, funny stuff, the quattro boys in the rs4's s4's etc where doing some nice speed though. What cracked me up was the dartford crossing, they closed it two cars in front at 6:30ish to wipe and grit it on the entrance to the tunnel, then let us go through only to see the otherside wasn't cleaned and everyone sliding all over the place as they came out

Had to dig myself out though in the airport car park as the snow was really deep and it pulled my valance off on a few clips, lucky I bought the shovel along, but then again a mouse could pull my valance off.

Cant say I had major problems in the GTI on 19" wheels running eagle f1's... but the difference in running winter tyres and summer in the snow or even cold for that matter is immense. There is simply no comparisson

Not really....they cost me less than £30 a tyre back in October. By mid-november I needed 2 new Pirelli's which would have cost me more than the £110 I spent on my Toyo winter tyres.

I've already had nearly 3 months use out of them, they have been exceptional in cold weather and meant I could get out and about yesterday

10 inches or 10mm? You're talking to us now, not your wife.

For all the winter tyre sceptics, it's not all about the snow. Winter tyres are much, much better than normal tyres at lower temperatures even on dry roads. I needed 4 new tyres in November, so thought I'd give a set a go. The difference on cold, leafy, slimey, wet roads is so noticable. Having been driving for 24 years and "managed" without feeling the need for winters for all that time, I really wish I'd fitted them years ago. The extra cost is also negligable, as you can only wear out one set of tyres at a time.

Great.. I work from my office during the week. Which is located across the hall from my bedroom. Although sometimes i just sit in bed with sky sports on in the back ground on my 3D Sony LED TV. Occasionally I may listen to some background music on my B&W speakers powered by a muscial fidelity stereo.

Hard work pays

p.s. I have brews brough to my desk... dont deal with manual labour where possible

Dunno what tyres the Passat's got but I managed to drive Saturday afternoon/evening without problem and also done about 4 hours driving yesterday again without any problems, most of which were on back roads in the country. 'Worst' moment was pulling into the top of my road which is on a incline and the snow had been compacted into ice by all the other cars coming in and out and I was going a little fast and the car slid sideways a little - this may or may not have been intentional   :lipsrsealed:

Remember kids, drive according to the conditions.

Yes the car was actually scraping the top off the snow, it was all fresh so compacted down under the tyres, out of town it was only about 5 inch deep but in town off the main road where no one was driving on it, it was a lot deeper, a lot of snow blowing along and getting stopped by parked cars and building up, I had to dig myself into my house when I got home at 02:00 in the morning as it had blow half way up the door. Got my mates M5 to his yard and when he opened the door it pushed snow out the way it was so deep. I did get stuck there today when I took him to work as my car just couldn't push through the snow built up in front of it, his lorry didn't have the same problem.

I don't have a wife but I do have a girlfriend, I presume you are talking about me telling her my c0ck is bigger than it really is? If that is what you mean I tell her I have a 6 inch c0ck, but I'm talking about the width when looking down at it.

If it makes you happy we'll say the snow was 1 inch deep and I got stuck constantly and then crashed.
