Title: Car looks like is gonna be write off :(
Post by: mid life crisis on 05 February 2012, 11:06
Morning all,

Well yesterday just BEFORE the snow started to come down I was at the petrol station just starting to fill up when the car in front ( a very nice Audi S4 estate decided he would put the car into reverse instead of 1st ) and stopping after pushing my car back about a foot :(

Now looking at my car his scuffed both the black top trim, the paint on the lower half and the bumper keeps popping out aswell as the arch trim loose. So got on the blower to the insurace and they said  as you can guess there is a like a 90% chance of a total loss. So was thinking might offer to buy it back of them but not too sure what to pay and just wondering if anyone else has done this lately and if so what sort of money they paid? Mines a : 1996 5 door gti 8v with approx 160,000, best part of a year mot.

Any ideas people?

In terms of it being a write off by insurance standards then yes it will be due to the value of the car. Will the bloke in the Audi not agree to pay cash to repair yours instead of going through the insurance and paying the excess?

What an idiot! If that was me i would have asked the audi driver if he wanted to settle outside of the insurance say for £300 and fixed the car seeing as its only a bumper and maybe reinforcer behind it plus made a few quid and not have a recorded write off aswell

His was a company car so his got nothing to loose, wasn't really that bothered and his attatude was well there's not really nothing there ! Like u say I've had it before and settled outside the insurance but I have a feeling he would piss me about. At least it happened on a garage forcourt and I got CCTV to back my claim if he trys to get out of it .

Bummer! guess it will be a cat D write off then ,im guessing youll be able to buy the car back from them for £250ish? and put it straight back on the road, pretty sure you wont need a VIC test for cat D .

Its a difficult situation. No offence but your car is prob worth £500 and the insurance company wont agree to the repairs. Plus you will have to pay your excess until the claim is settled and even though its not your fault it will still affect your insurance premium.

It will prob be cheaper to sort the repairs out yourself

No offence taken lol, tho I am in need of a 7 seater for the clan so it might be a blessing in discise if they do write it off as it will help a little towards the fund and if I can buy it back at a decent price might be able to either fix it up as a weekend drive or break it and make a couple of quid ?

not a bad idea, it wont cost much to repair and if you do decide to break it for parts you will make more than the car is worth

Sorry to hear that what a bummer I think u will get more than 500 insurance go off book price not mileage and condition I would expect about 800 to a 1000 and then buy the car back and fix it or break it and make money out of it everyone needs mk3 bits  let us know the final outcome please would be nice to know how much they say it's worth :)

If your going to rely on the CCTV as evidence I would try and get a copy now.....most systems will over right the footage after 30days

I may be be wrong but I thought petrol station forecourts, supermarket car parks etc were classed as private property and there is no law saying you have to exchange ins details, normally just knock for knock

Not true mate, the road traffic act states that car parks, garages etc that the public have access to are classed the same as public roads. If it was a private carpark that the public don't have access to ( work car park etc ) then it won't come under the road traffic act.

Well when I called the insurance and told them what and where it happened they didn't say there was a problem. they was thinking about just sending a salvage company to pick it up without evan booking it in but changed there minds when I said it was drivable. I'm 99% sure is a gonna, driving it today and lost the reflector, Indicator is hangging out and fog light mounting has split and to top it off the arch trip was loose n kinked and was flapping about so had to pull it off and the bottom of the wing came away with it :(

Evening People,

UPDATE:
Got a call from the insurance today it's gonna be a Total Loss on a Cat C as after inspection the body shop noiced the wing was just and i mean just touching the door on opening! and evan tho they said it's nothing major the Assessor from the insurance decided it had to be a cat C.

They have offered me £650 to settle due to the fact tey seem to think it's in ok condition but has higher millage of 161500, tho I'm going to try to push for little more they have also offered it back to me for £100 notes for salvage. Just wondering the following:

1. Is it worth me buying back and breaking?
2. how much do you think I should push for?
3. and how much it now being a Cat C is it worth now?

Oh and does anyone know if I can drive it back from the bodyshop if there going to cat c it?

Well cat c requires a VIC to go back on the road... Suprised they put it down as a C not a D....

Real shame tbh as im sure it drives okay and isnt that bad at all...

So buy it back for 100 and brake it. youll easy make that money and more!

Any pics of the damage?

The repairs wouldnt cost you more than £150 if you source the parts right and do it your self,  would it not be worth repairing?  The front ends of a golf is just nuts and bolts, very simple repairs,   a bumper, wing and front pannel wouldnt set you back more than £150 for a breakers.

Buy it back for £100, break it if you can be bothered sitting on bits for weeks or sell it for spare/repairs and you'll prob get £200. Then just buy another, mk3 8v are worth nothing. Mine has 80k miles, full vw history and is really tidy. Cost me £600, decent cars but nothing special.

mine got wrote off just before christmas after some kid decided to pull out infront of me in a terrible corsa with a ridiculous bodykit i got paid out for mine and when i aked to keep the car to break it for more £££ they took £50 off the settlement figure. So id imagine yours wouldnt be much different. dont accept your first settlement either by the way youll get more that way too!!

Right then fellow Golf lovers it has been great but it has come to the end of the line for me and my 8v to part terms, after fighting with the insurance company they refused to budge on the settlement offer of £650 and £100 salvage so I've bit the bullet and accepted, buying it back and and been offered £180 scrap would love to of kept it and fixed it back up or evan break it but don't have the time and need the money to replace with a *cough cough* 7 seater to fit all the off springs in :(

If anyone wants the car for more than the scrapy you have till monday eve to let me know if not off it goes.

Anyway its been great and thank you all for your feedback and help over the last year
