Right got me a new 20VT with 100k on the clock for the princely sum of £1850 and am going to document the few bits i do to it, mainly for my own records but you never know, someone else may find something worth reading along the way!
The plan is to make it into the wifes Daily so nothing mental, just all the service bits to freshen up and tighten the chassis and a few bits to modernise it a touch.
Here she is as purchased.....

So today became more expensive than i bargained for....
Took it to my local tyre place to get the wheels balanced, bit of a wobble at 60mph and when on the brakes....
... Turns out 1 front tyre was damaged so decided to get a new tyre and all wheels balanced.... £54 later the car drives smooth as a baby's bottom.... ok £54 is a lot as i'm planing on wheels in the future but its gotta be safe for now so i'm happy enough!
And new stereo is cool as beans!!!

how much was the unit
Its last seasons SONY XAV-60, was £299 but £249 ex display............ i got it a little less.
It was a toss up between this and a £150 ebay China/Hong Kong job with every feature available
.... I decided less flash and more cash was better in the long run!... And i trust SonY!

Looks a really great car as a base for a project :afro:

Couple of points to note this weekend
1. My log book arrived stating Golf GTi EXCLUSIVE (searched google, turns out this means very little!)
2. Got me fault code reader which lit up like a frikin Xmas Tree!!!!
Cleared the faults and fitted new temp sensor, still no joy, so gonna do the stat in the week.
Amazing what the fault code reader showed up:
16486 - Maf - Signal too low - NEW MAF TIME
16684-85-86 - Random Misfires - Keep an eye on this
17544 fuel trim bank (add) system to lean , p1136-35-00 - Investigate hose boost leaks
17704 - Error in mapped Cooling system - Hope that green sender and stat sort this
17705 - Pressure drop between turbo and throttle valve - Clean Throttle body and investigate boost leaks
17956 - Boost pressure regulation valve N75 - Check wiring to N75 and maybe replave N75
Plenty to be getting on with but nothing major i hope
3: got a 200 mile journey 2morrow, aiming for 35mpg, whoooooo!
-
37 mpg on a run now, amazing how a morning with a vag com tool and a screwdriver can sort things out.
Got the week off so new filters all round and full fluids change.
Sometimes getting a poorly looked after car back to health can be more satisfying than modding a car!
-
Amazed at how one little pipe slightly bigger than a spark plug can make or break the running of the engine.
Traced the boost leak to a small breather and what a difference!
Also did the rear pads, as the pic show the bloke who sold me the car must have had a phobia of general maintanence!!!

Tomorrows jobs:
1. Change plugs (although the rough idle is now sorted new plugs won't hurt)
2. Degrease engine bay and maybe a little detailing under there if the weather holds out.
3. Investigate, Drivers door speaker not working.

New GSF Thermostst arrived today, took a good hour to do but an easy how to on here now has my needle sat at 90c and not moving, very satisfying!
-
Busy cleaning today, hate dirty engine bays!
