On the way home from work, went round the corner, bang... oil everywhere...
Massive pool of it under my car (im parked on the road)
Should i clean it up? With what? :undecided:
Made a pretty awful noise, im guessing the engine blew up/ headgasket failure?
just surprised that it lost its oil so quickly
Took me months to get the thing going, now its totally f***ed, thought the clutch/gearbox was about to give up, but had just driven to preston and back 300 miles each way without anything going wrong!
Gutted.
-
I feel for you man. :undecided:
Maybe sand to clean it up.? Or just throw abit of dirt/mud on it.?
-
Sounds more like a piston snapped and the rod smashed a hole through the block
Yeah through dirt over the oil
-
Car still starts though, and idles... just sounds really tappety... is that normal? :undecided:
Yeah i better have a look for some dirt/sand...

Well it has not really blown up if it still runs, have a good look in the daylight and see what has happened.
-
an i thought i had problems, feel for you mate, but if it still idles theres still hope, what engine is it?
-
Well now it sounds like you hit your sump and cracked it.
Your car has no oil, why are you starting it?
That's like trying to go in the back door when dry. It just doesn't happen!

Was dark so i didn't realise i had lost oil until i went out to have another look, i wasn't sure what had happened
Nice analogy
I hope i've hit the sump or something, but the car isn't low or anything so :undecided:
Will have a look over the weekend and let you all know what's happened...
its an 8v AGG.

Two pictures of what appears to be the source of the leak...
Another picture of behind the engine, looks like another separate leak?

(sorry about having to send link instead of uploading the pictures, the img codes don't seem to want to work)

Can't see much from that picture, but if you managed to start it up again and it sounded just a bit tappety and idles then it won't be a rod. As tweed said you probably broke the sump. However the fact that you've started it afterwards and let it idle (however long it was) makes me think you've completely ruined any chance of saving that engine.
-
Thats the crankcase breather, sure its come from there?
Does the breather still have the metal horseshoe clip holding it in?
Have you checked all underneather for leaks?
Was it freezing where you were last night? Any anti freeze in it?
Sorry for so many questions, I had similar and it was the previous owner only half threading the sump bolt...

 fair enough
Seems to be coming from that... or in the crevice just behind that? the metal clip is still in there, and yeah it was really cold, must have been below 0 degrees, but had no problems in the cold before, yeah there is anti freeze.
Will have a better look tomorrow, cheers guys.

Check the oil level. Put oil in and start the engine, then look for leaks
-
Thats hardly a leak... if youve lost all your all the will be a huge mess, no just a drip
-
if there was a bang, all the oil left and it started ratteling it sounds like a ROD left the building.
they don't allways punch gaping big holes in block but can snap the intermediate shaft and or just crack the block or sump.
and they'll drive when blown up. i drove a 16v 4 miles on 3 cyls after a rod went out through the side, it took the oil pump, intermediate shaft and all the oil with it as well. it even was shunted around on the drive under its own power till k took the motor out

Does your engine run?
I thought my head gasket had gone but it was my gearbox...pissed oil everywhere (smells like rat pish).
If the oil is dark though its probably the engine...

This is what happened :embarassed:
Going to see what the garage say, but it wasn't engine oil, it was gearbox oil :embarassed:
It's probably going to need a new gearbox, garage is a 10 second drive, going to take it there... Going to be a lot cheaper if i can get a fairly cheap gearbox on here... (might put an ad up in the next couple days)
(Sorry for the completely inaccurate title to start with)
