Title: handbrake stuck on
Post by: Dan_GTi8v on 02 February 2012, 07:32
Never happened before not even last year with all the snow and ice etc, but when I went to drive home this morning my handbrake wouldn't come off and I could fully move the leaver with no resistance

haven't had a look yet as I'm off to bed but when I do is there anything I should look for, is it a common thing? it didn't really feel like the handbrake was on at least not 100% (though I cant really tell with the 1.8t ) so could it just be the cable was stuck?

cheers

I am going to guess at the handbrake mechanism is siezed on the calipers.

Could be the cable has split and it then froze.

If the handbrake lever is moving with no resistance then it is more than likely a snapped cable

Cable ain't snapped if brakes are still on

Hit your calipers with a club hammer and spray the mech with wd40.

It's common on all cars/vans

Mine always does this in winter, so just leave it in gear in the winter now.

Mine was stuck on this morning, drivers side, was already late for work so just had to go,sharp corners arse end out  after about six miles at a set of traffics ,smoke was belowing from that wheel, guess ive cooked the pads,it did the same last year but released after a complete 180 in the snow at the first corner, handbrake was spot on before now its not so good on that wheel, probably get away with unglazing the pads if not new set me thinks. Will be leaving it in gear overnight from now.

Spoke to my college technician about this as his wife owned a VR6 highline and had the same problem.

It's caused where the hadnbrake cable freezes to the calipers.

to solve this, take it apart wiggle the sh!t out of it till it become free, cover it in white grease and replace.

I will do this once its warmer, as i'm sick and fuc*ing tired of my hands turning blue the minute i leave the house

Try this if the mechanism inside the caliper is stiff:

Its for a mk4, but works fine on the mk3. The holes for the springs are even in place!!!

Nice one, I'm gonna be overhauling the rear brake system next month so these can go on the part list.

Yeah read that myself, I was thinking that maybe they'd be available from another VAG motor as I really like the idea of some spring assistance on the handbrake.
