Title: sub frames

Just a quick question? whats it like getting the front and rear sub frames off mk3 8v? iv got good mechanical knowledge so im confident i can do it, just wondering before i start? any problems to watch out for? cheers

No subframe on the rear but easy (ish) to remove the rear beam, front subframe is major work as you will need to support the engine from above.

Cheers wayne. apart from supporting the engine are there any other issues? i want to replace/ or refurb front subrframe and rear beam. looking a bit worse for wear plus got a corrosion advisory in last mot.

The rear beam is easy enough but you will need to split brake pipes also well worth replaing the bushes whilst it is out, front subframe is not easy really but again replace the bushes.

Another option might be to get another front subframe, repair it as required then swap it over.

Front subframe is pretty easy. Off course supporting the engine form above is essential. Take the wishbones off, 4 nuts for the rack, clips for the power steering pipes, disconnect both rear mounts and then the 4 subframe bolts and it should drop down.

Cheers for the info people. yeah buying new ones, changing bushes then swapping them is a good idea! definitely going to do that in the summer i think! any tips in maintaining the tracking set-up? just bought a sealey engine support beam on ebay for 50 quid. useful to have!

You shouldn't upset the tracking removing the subframe as it remains in place but if your changing track rod ends just count the number of turns it takes to screw off so you can put them back to where they were when refitting. Renewing wishbone bushes shouldn't affect the track.
