I would check history to see when it was last changed. If you cant find anything then get a cam belt kit

was done just before i got it

ran ok then gradually got worse then wouldnt start

took it to a diesel specialist

he saw a wobble on bottom pulley so he did than new from vag

and relined the timing said it was 2 teeth out

so i got it back started streight up and did so for about 4-5 days

the started to turn over alot before starting again and now we are back to the start

it seems to be back to stage one

now when i have been booting it a bit anything over 2500k revs it rattled loudly from the engine bay

im guessing the timing has slipped

as it will start but has to turn over for about 30-seconds to a minute (loads a smoke)

so i have bought a genuine vag cambelt kit with tensioner

i believe that rattle was the tensioner as that also had a wobble on it

any thoughts guys

Could be a worn crank if the pulley has been allowed to run a long time whilst loose.

the mechanic replaced the old bottom pulley

showed me it it had slight wear

only slight tho

he replaced it with a new one

he is a diesel specialist

so im sure he would of noticed if the crank was worn

Well I would get it rechecked, you may find the key slot has worn.

Well if it is hard to start it could be pump timing out.

yes what could cause this to be out

when he retimed it all up after putting the new pulley and belt on it was fine

lasted like 3 days then back to rely bad starting again

Pulley could be slipping on the pump, I believe they are taper fit so might need looking at or checking the bolt is tight enough.
