Title: Best way of exposing head unit wiring?
Post by: Hongkongphooey on 31 January 2012, 23:54
I'm in the process of trying to wire up my replacement head unit (a Pioneer KEH-P9220RDS) in my MKIII GTi.

I've removed the old head unit fine and I can now see the wiring loom. However, there's not much give in the wiring which is gonna make it tricky to wire the new HU up (it has a 16 pin plug instead of a 10 pin on the old one).

So the question is should I remove the panel with the heating controller on it to give me more leverage on the wires or remove the glove box for the same reason?

Advice from someone that's done this already appreciated.

Tom

Glovebox is the best way of doing it, plenty of room.

Does the wiring need messing with? MK3 has standard ISO wiring (2 rectangular plugs normally) and most aftermarket headunits have their own wiring harness that plugs in.

Has the old HU wiring been chopped in, or can you just unplug it?

I'd take the glovebox out anyway, gives space to pull the wiring to get the HU back in

It's really difficult to tell as the wires are set so far back in the gap where the HU sits which is why I wanted to take something out so I could take a propoer look at the wiring.

The old head unit looks like it could be as old as the car but I can't be sure on that.

The reason I ask re what to take out is that I'm particularly good at taking things apart but not quite so handy when it comes to putting them back together again

So it looks like the glove box is coming out then, hopefully the wiring should be reasonable stright forward from there, it doesn't look like anyone has butchered it at any point, it's only had 3 previous owners and 2 were middle aged women and unlikely to have gone through this process before, let's hope so

Ta for that

OK, all sorted now, the glove box off is a piece of cheese.

3 screws at the bottom of the glove box drops a plastic panel off.

Then 3 bolts that fix the glove box to a metal plate that separates the interior from the engine bay.

Then another 3 screws at the top of the glove box (including 1 screw that attaches the glove box lock catch).

After that just release the glove box light and the glove box comes out, then you're free to go at the wiring.
