Title: vr6 oil burners??
Post by: tilly05 on 31 January 2012, 12:47
My mates got a vr6 think its a 1997  I was asking how it is as a daily drive and along with fuel usage his main complaint was oil usage..
1 litre a week     Was I wrong in thinking that this wouldnt be the case it seems a bit much tbh  an old rattly hcs escort yes but a nice hmodern (ish) vr6
Should he be worried or is this the norm??

if it's norm I'l definattly continue the search for a 16v and leave the vr6 idea!!!

cheers

That is not the norm! He has something wrong there, it's leaking somewhere!!

I went through nearly 3 litres over the year, which is around normal but even then a tad high!

No engine should use oil like that. Even the old '50s and '60s motors, some of which were designed to consume a small amount of oil, didn't need topping up at that kind of rate. By the time you get to the VR6's era engines were pretty oil tight by design.

Spoke to him told him to get it looked at,  its not a litre a week but he still has to check it every week and add a little..
My quest shall continue, after missing out on 2 16vs recently may start looking at more vr's!!

Bit off topic but what are they like to live with?? I do a 25 mile round trip and dependent on what shift I'm on i am greated with the rush hour traffic round sheffield.. Could do without it costing me a fortune getting to work and back!!

To use a 1ltr of oil a week suggests a problem.
