Since I have owned the car the heating has only worked on setting 4, so after searching to fix a different problem I found part of my answer for this!
The heater resistor has failed causing it to only work on 4th setting so I've brought a new one, which is where I now have another question:
Where abouts in the passenger footwell does it fit?
Any advice would be great :-)

I'm doing the same to mine tonight, I'll stick a picture up later if you still need it.

this may or may not help you but my girlfriends clio had the same problem, all I had to do was unplug the resister and clean the pins

That would be great mate in still waiting for the part to arrive so hopefully by the weekend :-)

Here you go mate, mine is actually behind the glove box.
Its the silver component with the black plug and the 4 cables going into it.
Just unplug it and undo the retaining screw and it comes right out.

:-( massive fail changed it over this morning and no change still only works on setting 4, have I replaced the right part? I searched heating resistor on eBay and come up with a black clip with a metal plate and a green thing on it? It plugs in behind the glove box, what did your part look like?

Did you buy brand new or 2nd hand?? Could be a faulty?
I'm assuming from your description you brought this one??

Yeah I got mine second hand but was assured it worked on all settings, I think I'll email the seller and see what they can come up with.
My car is a 1.8 gl non aricon so mine is the top one.
Do you think that's the problem that I need a new resistor to make all 4 settings work?
-
Best bet is to buy a brand new one and fit it, if that doesn't work then it could be something else maybe the switch itself, I'm sure I read on here somewhere that someone's switch wasn't making full contact on contacts which gave him a similar problem.
Either that or ask a mate with working heating on their mk3 if you can try their resistor if it works you know you have brought a faulty resistor.

After some digging iv found a few people are saying try the switch, I'll have a play and try find someone local with a working heater and try that
:-)
