Title: mk2 pump!
Post by: ianmaxtec on 30 January 2012, 12:41

My 8valve mk2 wont start, and the pump under the drivers seat is not making the usual noises. My understanding is that this pump is triggered in 2 ways (via a relay), from the coil, and not sure about the second trigger. Before I start trying to figure out where the problem is, can anybody give me a few pointers ?

Thanks

First check for spark. Then check fuel is getting to the engine. If you cant hear the fuel pump priming, chances are its just the relay. Think its relay 167, 67, or 80 depending on time the relay was manufactured. Thats a good place to start anyway.

Did you just replace the relay?? And it may be a daft question but I am having the same problem, sometimes it does make the pump noise and can start if pump the throttle but quite a lot of the time takes a fair few attempts, so where is the relay I need to look at!?

Cheers for that, im in norfolk...so not that close. Might be able to sort something.

Where is this relay, I am new to this mk2 stuff....never owned a car that required me to work on it before.

Just above the fusebox mate. Think its bottom row, far right iirc.

Its all good, had a poke around earlier so now just need to find the right one and hopefully that will remedy the problem.

It still needs a few things to get it starting and running right, but seemed like an obvious place to start!
