Proud new owner of mk3 2l 8v GTI seeks advice on fast road cams . which ones are suitable and which ones are people getting good resutls from ?
-
Common advice suggests use the search button or buy a 16v or vr6 cause it will never be as quick and will cost more than a cam to get anything like
-
Not worth spending the money, you could spend loads and will still have less power than a 16v.
-
But what is a good cam for the 8v gti?
I have a low mile engine and want to keep but would like a bit more power.
Nothing to mad so I need to change other stuff.
-
At last some sanity , why is it whennever you ask about improving 8v performance the threads get hijacked by the 16V owners .. If I'd wanted a 16V I would have bought one.. but I'm not a hairdresser so I didn't

Kent 285 seems to give good results.

Point missed  if you did fit a cam plus exhaust and air filter the most your going to see is 12/15 bhp tops, so little point in doing the work.

Not worth doing. 16v is a much better engine in every way.
-
Khare you been in your kart yet? Nothing compares to it and any car feels slow  you don't need a fast car.
Plus I have a vr6 :lipsrsealed:

I think it was Khare that put a 286 kent cam in his 8v iirc! I looked when doing my engine swap, and they do occasionally come up on ebay. The ones I was looking at only went for £35-40 as well so well worth the cost imo, although at the time they both sold, it was a couple of days before payday and I was proper skint at the time!

Not driven mine yet as it's still not completed, but I have been in race karts before. Do remember I raced in Brazil back in 2010

Yup. Kent GS23H cam. 11.52" lift, 285 degrees duration. Rtech dyno showed 138hp with cam, airbox mods and exhaust. 16v is a much better car to drive as the power is held for longer up the rev range and its a more linear power and torque curve.
If you can find a hardcore cam for under £50 then great, get it, but don't spend £200+ on a new cam as for that money you can buy a good 16v engine and stick it in your chassis, and instantly it'll feel like a new car, and sound better too!

I can see this thread becoming another 1.8t discussion any time soon :lipsrsealed:
