Morning all.
I've just put the GTI in for it's second service and to have the wind noise looked at - again! This time, I've a second concern. The engine seems to be using about 2-2.5 litres of oil every 3.5-4k.
The service lad seems to reckon "up to 1L per 1000km/700m" - I was absolutely flabbergasted. Technically this means between services the engine could use 14 litres of oil - basically changing its own oil twice?!
Has anyone else noticed excessive oil consumption, or is mine really bad?
Also - the lad seemed quite insistent that a 'fuel treatment' would definitely be an idea as it works wonders, especially on a car like the GTI...as it would give the valves a good clean.  Obviously doesn't know what direct injection means then.

I drove 14k miles before my first oil change. During that time I checked the oil every month. To my surprise I've never had the need to top up oil during this period. It was always full. After the first oil change I've driven 11k and still haven't had the need to top up oil.
I had a nice long 4k trip to Italy when the car was new so during the first two weeks I had the chance to run it in in the alps and autobahn. Seems that this was good for my car. :) I've used V-power 90% of the time when it's available. Don't know if that has had any affect.

That does seem a touch high.
I had 1 litre given to me when I picked up my GTD 2 years ago and I'm just coming to the end of that after 11.9k.
-
mine also had a huge oil drinking problem.... which may/may not have had a connection to the engine failure. Was never clearly established. I was told to keep an eye on it as a precaution. :nerd:
-
Odd - I've never heard of a modern engine drinking so much. I'll keep an eye on it once I get it back. It's on just under 14k now, so it may be slightly more behaved now that everything has bedded in better.
-
Seems high however (this might sound real pessimistic of me) what can you do about it? I guarantee you that you can take it to VW as many times as you want, they wont find a problem with it. Id be tempted to just keep topping it up.

Aye, this is part of the problem. If it becomes excessive then I'll escalate it, but other than that there isn't really anything. The service lad seemed keen to stress that "they will still take a look", even though there are no oil leaks. So unless they're going to strip the engine down to every bearing and ring to measure tolerances - I don't think they will :D
-
Mine uses none,i have never had to top up my oil in the 2 1/2 years i have owned it  ,i have only done 11,000 miles in 2 1/2 years but even so it does not seem to use any oil.

I have to say, I'm on the same sort of mileage as Simon. My GT has done just over 4000 miles in the first year since getting it. My Mk2 has done just over 2000 miles in 3 years. My Passat on the other hand...

23k.
2 services and not a drop of oil used.
Checked every month or two.
Beat that oil burners.

Ha ha - same here as well. Our Yaris gets the mileage and makes it so much more fun when I get back in the GTI
-
I cant imagine having a GTI on the driveway and having to take a Yaris to work. Everyone to their own.
-
GTI goes to work, Yaris is the wifes and goes to the shopping centres, car parks and sh1tty parts of town that I don't want to leave the GTI in
-
A lot of Mk 5 Gti owners used to suffer very high oil consumption in the first 10,000 miles (including myself) but I've not heard many complaints with the Mk 6, so best keep you eye on it
-
Car is 3 years old in July been serviced twice and only needed a small amount of oil at last service, mind you have only covered 12500 miles since new.

Well I would be worried if it didn't use any oil.

When it comes to my Mk2, errrr no  just 400 miles last year. Sometimes I even forget I've got it.
If I had a Mk6 GTI/D, that would probably get used less than my GT. I just prefer to jump in one of the other the already dirty cars, and not have to worry about it.
-
I have too top mine up occasionally.
Had my gti for about year and half now with 19000 on the clock, oil changed twice. I also have a forge catch can..if that makes any difference
-
Not had to top up my current MK6 or the Edition 30 which I had before that. However the Polo 6R GTI drank it like petrol
-
30K on the clock from new in 2 1/2 years, not a drop burnt. No point in having a GTI on the drive an not use it.
-
ahem 8k in 5 months on the GTD from new and all still good! no top ups!
Know it says gti but I'm just joining in!
